View Full Version : A sunrise and a Hudson River painting

I've been out at dawn three days in a row and am really enjoying the peacefulness of the sunrise. We had a paintout today at Boscobel, but they don't let us in until 9am, so I did this one here by the lakeshore.

I went to Boscobel around 9:30 and did my second one. I've painted this Hudson River overview from there a gazillion times and I have to say, I'm really sick of it! I haven't done it for a long time, and although I've done it in 12x24 and 4x10 long formats, I've never done an 8x16 of it. So, that's what I did this morning. It will be a lot more interesting in late fall, when the marshes turn rusty red and the tree foliage is vibrant.

Love the marsh view. It's really neat that you'e abovel ooking out over the marsh below. Not having such a marsh view from abpve it's hard for me to imagine being sick of it ....but I guess too much of even a good thing could get on your nerves

Bruce, thank you! As I read your comment I realized that overview from Boscobel that I'm so tired of has taught me a lot about rendering distances over the years.

Hi Margie. Thanks so much for stopping in and commenting.

Jan, I had to laugh when I read your comment. It didn't even dawn on me that most folks have a marsh view from close to the level of the marsh. LOL...I guess that's one of the special features of the Hudson around Constitution Marsh. You actually can go down there and hike out onto the marsh on boardwalks built by the Audubon Society. It's really spectacular. It's quite a climb over a hill to get out there, but well worth the hike. If you can ever break away on the second Tuesday of any month, you can stand there on the bluff at Boscobel and paint. On any other day they tell you to move. (Grrrrrrr...) OH! And I still want to meet to paint at Weir Farm somtime!

Dana, hi! *big hug* How wonderful to see your smiling face again. Thanks for the PM...Great to hear from you. Steal a day sometime and come up here to paint, okay?

Mrlopez, thank you---glad you like them.

Rob, unfortunately it clouded up here and was raining by dawn. I got up early to try to see the meteors before I started painting. It was too overcast, and then just as I set up to paint, it started to rain. I'm glad you got to see them for us!

Nice work, Jamie. I agree about the distance working.

Are those the "new" slow-drying acrylics?

Dana ... I haven't seen you here for ages!

Thanks, Wayne!

Brian, I had a conversation with Lee recently in which he said he's so sick of painting Manhattan and its surroundings. I guess no matter how great and varied the views are, as human beings we tend to tire of the familiar.

Jimmy, is there a new slow-drying acrylic available? Do you have a link you can share? If they're artist grade, I'd like to try them.

Peg, thank you for stopping in and commenting. Much appreciated. :)

Jamie,

I heard about them a while ago. I know that Marc has tried them. He said that they felt very similar to oils.

I'm not positive if this is the same brand, but I think it is.

I love the sunrise reflections in the water on the first one. You sure made it feel like a peaceful time of day. That second one has the neatest composition with the meandering water shape. Very nice! I'm looking forward to fall too because it's too hard trying to paint all this green!

I no sooner post the question "Where are the Acrylics?" that I read your post - the first acrylics I have noticed so far. Nicely done.

Thanks so much, Jimmy. I was going to place an order for some art supplies today. I'll add a few tubes of those to my list and give them a try.

Bernie, you are most welcome. 'Always glad to bring the Hudson Valley to your living room. LOL ;)

Donna, when I first started to paint this scene, it was the distant mountains and river that drew my attention. Over time, I've been more drawn to the intricacies of the meandering marsh channels and their compositional potential.

Frank, I've been trying to push color lately without taking a piece too far beyond the bounds of reality. I want to make it interesting, but no so far into Disneyland that viewers can't buy into the scene. It's a fine line sometimes! Whether I'm going too far or not far enough is an issue I'm always wrestling with.

Brian, I usually paint in oils, but enjoy forays into other mediums like acrylics, pastels, gouache, watercolor and casein. I seem to get "stuck" in that other medium for awhile until something jars me back to my oils. I guess I'm stuck in Acrylic Mode now, and enjoying it immensely.

People here actually work? Next thing you know, I'll find out that they also sell their paintings. :D

I also start a portrait class soon - really looking forward to that. I'll be booked two nights a week.

I can't wait to see your new work.
