View Full Version : Mangos - WIP

xposted from acrylics:
Here's another I started this weekend. Acrylic 18" x 24" gallery wrapped canvas based on photo I took in May at Selby Gardens, Sarasota, FL.
I'm quite a ways from finished, but having fun. Plan to glaze darker colors and spots on the mangoes and pull off some of that to reveal the lighter colors beneath but worked mostly on the foliage yesterday.

This looks lovely already. It seems to have a 'joyful' feel to it already. Hope that makes sense.

Beautiful! Isn't Selby a nice place to visit! Definitely a lot of eye candy!

You do these so well Celeste. You have a great start and I'm looking forward to seeing this one completed.

Pulling up my chair to watch! :)

This will no doubt be quite spectacular when finished Celeste. Every time you paint something, I think, oh, I love that! I want to try that!

Gosh I love to watch you paint, it's always so nice to see a wip. And I can tell the light in this one is going to be awesome!

I can't wait to get back to this painting. It has special meaning to me (along with our August Acrylics Different Strokes Project Painting). See - we've been forced to vacate our home for 8 days over the past 3 weeks due to AC problems not being able to be fixed. Along with numerous other stressors, these paintings were started in the "studio" of our lovely hosts' home. She had an unused easel and allowed me to enjoy its use. These two paintings (D.S. painting to be revealed Aug. 20th) were quite a respite for me psychologically. When I paint, it takes me far away from troubles.
And, since both these paintings are based on photos I took in a lovely place, I'm transported mentally when working on them.
I particularly liked the movement of the foliage "dancing" around the luscious fruits in this backlit shot. Maybe I'll have an update tomorrow. Will be contemplating just how to render the spotted fruits effectively yet subtlely.

Celeste, this is looking great, and I've pulled up my chair also.

I can't wait to see more of it :) Boy, you have a good attitude about all the AC problems. Hopefully they get it fixed this time.
08-14-2007, 01:43 PM
Thanks...hope so too...so far so good on the AC.

The palette of bright yellows and greens just shout tropical. So cheery!
08-14-2007, 04:38 PM
However nice your host/hostess, home is best! :D
I'm sitting here watching too! :D
Tell me Celeste - will there be any subtle reddish blush on the mangoes?
We only see them as fruits in the supermarket shelves!
08-14-2007, 05:12 PM
Mmmmm Mangooooo (drooling) I love the way you have captured the play of light through the leaves, looking forward to seeing the end product.
08-17-2007, 06:37 AM
I had a chance to paint for about an hour last night. Here's where I'm at now.
08-17-2007, 07:15 AM
I can't wait to see this when it is done! It's already a wonderful painting.
08-17-2007, 09:33 AM
Celeste - Did I tell you I think your painting is just yummy?? :D
08-17-2007, 11:43 AM
great palette of greens, thanks for sharing this with us :)
08-18-2007, 12:52 AM
Yay, I'm so happy to see you were able to work on this one again :) Looking wonderful.

This is coming along deliciously.

It's looking wonderful Celeste.

Thanks everyone. I have so many errands/domestic things to get done today; I hope to get to paint on this later.
08-18-2007, 04:39 PM
The light is already beautiful ...... take your time -we don't mind waiting :D
08-18-2007, 05:43 PM
Can definitely wait! :D Love the blues throughout.... :)

Just an update after a brief painting session tonight.
08-21-2007, 12:39 AM
It's looking better and better. I like the texture and shadows on the Mangos, and the warmer tones you put on the Mango that is right in front. The branches are looking really good too. You really made some progress.
08-21-2007, 12:14 PM
Lovely progress. It is good to see that you are adding in depth now.
08-21-2007, 06:07 PM
This is looking great Celeste! You have such a way with sunlit leaves.
08-21-2007, 09:48 PM
I agree with Marianne, your greens are wonderful. I am surrpised that the blue is so successful but it really is. And that light! I too would like to see a tinge of red blush. The whole painting would really sing!
08-21-2007, 11:17 PM
I'm going to have to figure out just how to bring that red in. I tried a glaze as you can barely see, but didn't like it...will fiddle around with something. Didn't get to paint today as I was getting several paintings framed and ready for gallery and show coming up.
08-21-2007, 11:26 PM
I can understand that. Red on top of green will ionsist on make a muddy mess! I think you'd have to go with something heavier than a glaze but not as thick as a loaded brush... something to actually cover the green... and maybe a yellowish highlight around the "interior" side of it?
08-22-2007, 06:34 AM
Thanks Laura, that's what I was thinking too.
08-22-2007, 06:37 AM
lovely and fresh and delicious :) ... watching the progress ....
08-22-2007, 06:38 PM
  can't wait to see.... well, yes, I can, but I don't want to!
08-22-2007, 07:57 PM
Maybe I'll get to paint tomorrow.

This just keeps getting better Celeste. I can hardly wait to see you finish. You do such an amazing job with leaves. I was showing my 9 year old granddaughter some of your paintings yesterday, she is my critic, so now she understands why I tell her you are a much better artist than I am. She says she still likes mine better, lol, it is great to have such an impartial judge!!
08-23-2007, 08:35 PM
Thanks Sue - I'm thrilled to be in such talented company as yourself. Does your granddaughter ever paint with you? I do so much love to paint with children. They have such unemcumbered creative minds.
Off to the easel in a bit.
08-23-2007, 11:21 PM
Had a little bit of time to work on this tonight. I rather like the red addition - what do you think? Is this what you had in mind? The photo's a little washed out.
08-24-2007, 01:43 AM
Oh that's perfect! It livens up the whole painting! More, more!!
08-24-2007, 06:40 AM
Thanks Laura. I think I'm gonna stare at this one on the wall a few days and probably call it done unless someone suggests something else. Will try to post a more realistic photo later.
08-24-2007, 07:46 AM
This is coming together nicely.
The shifts between warm and cool colors and the dancer-like movements in the shapes make this painting lively and interesting.
I'd be tempted to lose some of the edges on that one on the left, to try to get it seated a bit more.
Thanks for showing its progress
08-24-2007, 11:20 AM
Looking wonderful! I really like that touch of red, suggesting one ripening mango and drawing the eye in. :)
08-24-2007, 12:09 PM
Cancel my suggestion!
Your latest version is perfect!
08-24-2007, 01:27 PM
Here's that better photo I promised - more accurate colors. I think I'll sign it and call it done.
Thanks for everyone's help on this!
08-24-2007, 04:03 PM
definitely :) the complimentary makes the whole thing glow more :)
08-24-2007, 05:24 PM
Beautiful light in your painting!

Thank you all. It's signed and ready to take final photos before varnishing. Now comes the task of finding my next painting to work on!
08-25-2007, 10:22 PM
Absolutely stunning finish Celeste, I love it. Well done.
08-26-2007, 12:37 AM
I love the red addition, beautiful!
01-13-2008, 10:09 AM
Had to come back and re-visit after you put it in the 'Show' here :)
It really does work with the red - I love all the many layers of depth you have here - the eye is taken back into the picture plane beautifully ..... and those so strong contrasts - yummy!
01-13-2008, 11:29 AM
Thanks Maureen - it's been in the gallery show for the last few months - when I picked up some last week to swap out, they informed me that they'd sold "Mangos"...so I'm thrilled!
01-13-2008, 01:04 PM
I'm not surprised - that's super news :D
01-13-2008, 01:47 PM
Congrats! I'm not surprised either. :)
