View Full Version : Pink Ladies (x-posted in watercolours)

I enjoyed painting these tulips, with the contrast between the strong pink and the pale tulips, and the strong shadows. From my own reference photo, 12 x 10 inches, watercolour on Fabriano extra white CP 140lb paper.
Thanks to Deb (Nodakerdeb) in the watercolour forum for suggesting the title when I was stuck!

Lovely painting, Ruth. The flowers are beautifully painted, but I especially like the greens and the shadows.

Thank you Sylvia :) You know how I always struggle with foliage, so that means alot!

Ruth - these are super! I have to concur - I think you got the blues in the tulip leaves just right - and nicely judged colour for the shadow as well

Nice work Ruth - lovely contrast in the tulip colours and really good foliage colours! Nice delicate w/c effects too:D

Ruth, I love the foliage and shadows treatment too with the wet-in-wet effect, quite nice textural interest. And I like the composition with the focal point applying the rule of thirds and interest spiraling outward from that. The odd number of blossoms and the odd number brighter/darker colored ones triangularly positioned provides such nice balance.

Beautiful work with both the flowers and the leaves, and I also like the colours very much.

The shadows on the wall makes this flower painting very interesting to watch, and I love your wet in wet effect on the foliage.

Thanks everyone :)
The composition took alot of time to get right, I must have taken hundreds of reference photos with different arrangements of the tulips, some with the dark shadows on the wall, some without. I almost didn't use this one, thinking the shadows might be a bit too much, but decided to go for it in the end.
Hi Char! I think we'll be spending alot of time here, don't you? ;)
Of course I had made a decision last week to concentrate on landscapes for a while - just before I found this forum! lol Not to worry, I'll get back to flowers soon, it's a passion! ;)
