Okay, let's get the ball rolling and we'll start by gathering the group that might be interested in the getaway in the Dallas area.
Everyone who might be interested in gathering in the Dallas area, add a reply to this topic.
How about ideas on where to go and what to paint? I'll throw out the first few general ideas.
We could go downtown for cityscapes, the Ft Worth Botanic Garden for flora, go to a farm area for barns and such things, the lake for water/boat/landscapes, hire a model for portrait/figure painting, the zoo for animals, or we could just hang out. http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif If any of these interest you or you have more ideas, post 'em!

Randy, what radius around Dallas/Ft Worth are you considering? There is also the Arboretum in Dallas for flora and water (overlooks White Rock Lake).

Good idea, msue! We could probably do flora, landscapes and maybe even wildlife and people at White Rock Lake. Are you interested in being there?
I'm not sure what radius to work with. Depends on what we all want to do. But I suspect wherever we decide to go, we can have a hotel very close to it to stay at. For people who might have to fly in, we probably don't want a 100 mile trip from the airport. Actually, that would depend on who's coming from where. If everyone's driving there, we could have it pretty much anywhere. If some people are flying in, we should have it fairly close to the airport (within shuttle/taxi range)

OH yea, I would definitely be there. Where and when??
I was wondering why we might not consider something closer to the Austin area, though, especially since the landscape is so beautiful in spring with the bluebonnets blooming and the rolling hills...
But either way, count me in. I'll be there.

I think it would be marvelous to schedule this trip for April/May time.. that's when all the beautiful wildflowers in Texas are blooming.
Are there any state parks with inexpensive cabins or something where we could perhaps all stay together and paint as the feeling came upon us?
Another good place for landscapes is Lake Sam Rayburn, Toledo Bend, or even Lake Conroe, Lake Livingston, or Lake Travis (in Austin)

A state park is a great idea too, but if we have people flying in, we couldn't get off the beaten track like that. If everyone is driving, that could be an option. There are a couple of them that have cabins. I'm pretty sure the time will be May.

I'll be driving, for certain. No sense in flying to almost anywhere in a 6-7 hour radius. Besides, the countryside is beautiful!!

Is it just going to be us three??? Anyone else out there interested in the Dallas getaway? Maybe we need to do some promoting outside of wetcanvas also. Are either of you involved in any other art groups where we could promote it?

Absolutely! In addition to being an event for WetCanvas! regulars, this is a great opportunity to introduce newcomers to our virtual neighborhood... http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Cheers.

No, I'm not involved in any art groups locally. However, I do know a few artists here that I can talk to about this trip, and a whole university of art students who would perhaps be able to join us.
I've been trying to remember to go talk to the art department about WetCanvas! anyway, so maybe this would be a good thing for their students to get involved with.
I'll try to get in touch with the art people where I work and let them know about this trip. I'll need to get more details, though, about where and when, and approximate costs to people who might be joining us.
Can we perhaps firm up a date first, and then go on to firm up a location?
Also, I would like to bring my husband with me, but I don't think he would be terribly interested in watching a bunch of us paint - maybe we could have some arrangements to entertain spouses?

Yes, for last year's event, we had planned several events for spouses. If memory serves me correctly, we had a golf outing, a shopping trip, and some tours of local attractions....
Definitely something that each local coordinator should keep in mind. If you have spouses or significant others coming, be sure to have some alternative activities for them (or at least make some suggestions!) :-)
Scott
http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/frown.gif I want to go to all of them. http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/frown.gif where is the message icon for being torn between all locations? <-------------->?

LOL
Well, llis, I'm certain you'd be welcome at all of them! Bring those hunky men who were working on your garden house, while you're at it! LOL
OT, I know. Sorry. (Smacking on my own wrist). Won't happen again. <snicker>

Well, I don't have any money for an excursion to Dallas today -- But I may later--fingers crossed---. So I can not commit.
Is there a reasonably priced save camping in the area? I'm thinking Cheap as possible trip, and I may be able to squeeze the money out of the turnup http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/wink.gif
There is Cedar Hill State Park on Joe Pool Lake south of Dallas and Camping around Lewisville Lake north of Dallas. Lot's of Motel 6's too. http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif Just 2 minutes (okay 5 with traffic lights) from shopping and eating.
Cedar Hill State Park is about 30 minutes from downtown Ft Worth and 20 minutes from downtown Dallas. If that helps anyone who can't afford hotels.

There should be plenty of campgrounds in the area, but I'm not familiar with them. Is there anyone else considering the Dallas getaway?

Randy,
I'm in the process of planning out our summer vacation. (We have visitation with two sets of kids for the summer!)
Can we start nailing down a date and work in the location later?
I'd prefer to go before June (too TOO hot to paint outside in June).. and early May sounds just about right to me.
How's everyone else schedule look?

I just moved from Plano to Lewisville. I am very interested in your Get-Away! If anyone needs info for camping etc. around Lewisville let me know. Takes about 15 min to get to Dallas from here. Interstate 35 runs straight into Dallas. :-) May would be a good time here. June is really HOT!

Sorry, I've been a little out of pocket...
I'd say ealy May is good. I've never been to something like this. Has anyone else? What do we need to organize? Do we just get together and go somewhere? Have excursions planned? Travel planned? Do we paint outside? Hang around the hotel and talk? Anyone who's been to something like this before, please let me know a little more about them.
As far as I'm concerned, we can just pick a weekend and go for it. Mid May is the only time I can't make it. Weekends of May 13-14 and May 20-21. Pick a day and let's start planning and reserving whatever needs reserving http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif

Looks like the first weekend in May I'll be moving ;( The last weekend is my only available slot left, May 27-28.
How does that look for everyone else?
We'll have to make sure there's a pool nearby so we can cool off periodically! ;-)

Hey Electra, you're the first person to nail it down to one weekend, so I vote we go for it! Last weekend in May - 27th, 28th. How about it gang?
Unfortunately, now we have to decide where! http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif
I have never been to anything like this, so I'm not sure what we want available. Do we want lots of city conveniences, or does that matter? Do we want a scenic place in the country? Let's try to do a quick survey on this and we can start booking the rooms and such things. I'm open for anywhere from the hill country to north texas. Where is everyone coming from? I'm in Dallas. I believe Electra is in Austin? Mellryn who's not sure she can make it is coming from up north (KS). I can't tell where msue is but I assume somewhere around Dallas. Fritz is in Dallas area. Hmmm. Sounds like Dallas area/North Texas would work best for most. Although I'd kind of like to get away somewhere new.

Yes, I'm in Dallas County. I'm not sure about the dates yet. Your questions are good. Are we looking at a "paint in", plein air, or just meet visit and maybe take in a few galleries together. There is a place in East Texas I've been wanting to visit (I had signed up for a workshop there about 3 years ago and it was cancelled so I never got to go) Uncertain, Texas. Suppose to have a great gallery and classroom space. But since I am only a maybe. The rest of you should chose.

It looks like it's been 3 years since you posted this message, but I thought I'd check in anyway. Did you ever get together to paint in DFW? I'm new to WC and currently live in downtown Dallas. I just got back into painting a week or so ago. I'm currently looking for any painting workshops around Dallas. I've switched to Acrylics instead of Oils and am looking for some tips. If anyone out there knows of a teacher accepting students or workshop please let me know. Thanks...

Tyler, Texas is an Idea. We have one of the largest state parks in the state complete with camping areas. You can even rent a cabin or lodge. We are also known as the Rose Capital of the world. Theres the Azilia district. Also Mrs. Lees Garden is not far from here. She had a huge farm or small rance. She planted hundreds of Acres of daffodils.http://www.daffodilgarden.com/daffodil_photo_album.htm
Theres an abundance of lakes also. In Palistine, Texas there's Dogwood State park too. It is built like a State Park, only instead of a lake in the center, there is hundreds of thousands of dogwoods. Also there is the Historic TEXAS STATE RAILROAD in palistine.

Ooh! I just found this! Count me in on any future plans. I work at home alone all the time and frankly, I think it is making me a little screwy in the head. I would LOVE to get together with other local artists and work. Too cool!
