I have been watching with interest the thread about the Flemish technique and I am curious if this is suitable for protraits. I want to try it but the next picture I am looking to do is a portrait. Any input would be appreciated.

Absolutely, If you research a bit you can find portraits done in this style. It is possible and it can have a luminous quality that is not possible in any other technique.

Lol - if you research Jan Van eyck - Flemish painter C15th - you'll see his beautiful luminosity was achieved through many glazes - on top of this method:D

Try Vermeer also.

Have you asked in the Portrait froum?
