View Full Version : Waimea Valley Audubon Center

Reminiscing today about my favorite place on earth, Hawaii, I decided to do a little 5" x 7" landscape of a scene from the Waimea Valley Audubon Center on Oahu's North Shore. If you ever go to Hawaii, don't miss this gorgeous place.

What intrigued me about many of the scenes in Hawaii are the fantastic shadows on the expanses of green. That's what I tried to capture with this little painting.

I find landscapes to be so intimidating to me and painting this tiny is challenging to keep it loose and yet somewhat accurate. So much to learn, so little time :crying:

You certainly do not express intimidation with this.

Hawaii is terrific. I honeymooned there :D

Thanks Carol. Funny you mention honeymoon...another little painting I plan to do is from photos in New Orleans where we honeymooned...have a couple picked out.

Hi Celeste - this looks great. I've been there and I know what you mean about the shadows from all the foliage.

Now you need to do it again ... only bigger :)

Wow Celeste. I am impressed. You achieved what you had set out to do. The shadows are great and it is a colourful and welcoming little painting. I could never paint so small. You have brought some sunshine into my life today . We have had grey skies and rain for weeks. Ugghhh!!

That's a lovely little painting, packed with color! Love it!

This is a great little painting and you did magnificent on those shadows and shades of green. I love Oahu's North Shore, the surf is rougher but has its own beauty.

I love, love, LOVE the dappled foreground! This just has that special feel you only get in Hawaii. You should do a large version! Great job.

Thanks everyone...I'm glad for those of you who've been to Hawaii that it captured that feeling...do hope to do a larger version someday.

This is fabulous...my favorite part is the play of light and shadow in the foreground.

Lovely to have some sunshine brought into this dreary, dreary and wet world!
Thanks Celeste :D
Love that dappled pattern!

I was utterly surprised to find out that this was only 5X7"!
It looks so much bigger than that.
I especially like the way you've handled the dappled sunlight on the grass.
Beautifully done.

Thanks everyone. I've been doing little 5" x 7" landscapes since I'm trying to get better at them and hate the thought of potentially wasting a larger canvas! I hope to post a progressive street scene later tonight that's also 5" x7"

I have been to the Hawaii airport. twice.. Does that count as visiting Hawaii?? :D :p

You sure got a lot of detail into a small painting, just lovely!!! :)

haha...JJ, the first time I flew into Hawaii and left the airport towards Waikiki, I thought, oh no, this can't be Hawaii! Well, that quickly changed. I hope you can visit the BEAUTIFUL parts of Hawaii, although, the view from the air is incredible!

This is so colorful. I didn't realize how lush green could be until I visited Oahu. You have captured it nicely.
