I am starting to learn about this medium and how it relates to oil painting. I must say I am incredibly confused as I am learning. I hear about it being used for underpainting, as well as on top of oils. I am learning of pigments made with watercolor in addition to the egg emulsions.. and of dry pigments.

Your resource was invaluable, and at the same time it raised numerous new questions.

Help!

Yes, egg tempera can be used as an underpainting to oils. It can be painted into a wet layer of oil paint to create details. However egg tempera is not recommended over dried oil paint. Koo Schadler has one of the best books on egg tempera painting to date. In it she discusses her technique of oil glazes over egg tempera. View her site at: http://www.kooschadler.com
