While I'm waiting for the background to dry on Phoebe's portrait I've begun composing the second in a string of three portraits I'll be working on in the weeks to come. All three are in oils on 16" x 20" canvases.

Here you have Paw, a delightful 'ol chuckle-head, brother to Maw. I think his expression says it all. The essence of a Basset's character in a single image.

The twinned portraits, Maw & Paw, will share a design element conceived of by their owner: each will sport their own bandanna. Paw here with his pirate-y emblem, and Maw a more ladylike red print. Maw's portrait will be posed in the same 3/4 view, but facing towards Paw, even as he'll face her. Once framed and hung they'll be perfect companions in art even as they are in life. Maw's portrait however will be a more dignified, mouth closed pose. ;)

I'll draw out Maw next as I'll want to share my background portrait with both canvases at the same time.

Dave

I can't wait to see the rest of this, the drawing you've done so far is just incredible. I can see his character, you've just captured a spirit in there.

OK, the weekend is here and it's a long one for us here in Quebec. Let's get some work done!

Here are both Maw & Paw, together again for the first time. I've tinted the canvas with Paynes gray to tame the stark white of the primed gesso and I'm ready to put down the background.

I think they go together pretty well so far. Whadaya think?

You know, Dave (uh, Norman :)) all of your enormously gorgeous bassetts would sure look good in book format!!!! (unless you've already considered this, take the hint and run with it!!)

I think these are my favorites of all!! Wow!! {Not much on adjectives so this will have to do]

Here they both are with their background.

The base is a fairly even mix of ultramarine, raw umber and Naples yellow. The darkest bands at top and bottom are 2/3 ultramarine and 1/3 raw umber. The smoky layer, allowing the illusion of depth, is straight titanium white applied to the existing base layer.

Wonderful, simply wonderful. Watching your WIPs is an education most people have to pay for - even though I don't paint, I always learn something from watching the way you plot the work, handle the background and consider the way light falls on your subjects.

It hasn't really been "4 weeks" since I've worked on Paw, just 4 weeks since I've posted. I've had four canvases in rotation, only two of which I'm posting.

Here's the start of Paw's big 'ol dome ...

End-game now, folks. The canvas is covered and both Paw and Maw will wrap up in the next week. Then the unveiling to the client, who is quite excited!

I put the two of them up, side by side, and am well pleased. Remember, both canvases have identical backgrounds. This just shows you how capricious digital photography is depending on the room light!

I agree with chisaii, why dont you publish them, they are just fantastic. Dont be selfish and share them with the rest of the world. Im sure you can find some organization which would fund it. Just an idea.

That's very flattering, Ceci, but I suspect we're a pretty dedicated (and small) group who appreciate pet portraits. It's an intiguing idea though!

And don't forget, I am sharing with the world. Just look at the countries represented in this thread alone! ;)

What a wonderful pair....you could get them digitally stored for giclee prints at some future point, it's not expensive to do that usually. and the giclee is so good if you print on canvass and do a few hand touches, it's very hard to tell they are not originals.
Fantastic!
