In my opinion, Goicolea is one of the most amazing contemporary artists working today.

His work follows Cindy Sherman and Morimura (sp) but takes it to a new level.

what do you think?

Oh my Kay! In his artists statement he says "The childlike, vulnerable and idiosyncratic nature of my work creates predicaments that strive to provoke empathy in the viewer." He missed the boat with that one on me! (at least with some of them) I do not feel empathy but rather the opposite. Makes me want to turn and RUN! NOT from the work, please understand. It's awsome. But rather from the scenes them selves. It makes me really glad to be a voyuer and not a participant. I find his tehcniques fascinating and could spend hours here. These leave me with mixed emotions.

i think that cindy sherman does a better job both technically and imagewise. i like his ideas, but somehow feel they are self indulgent in a way that doesn't work. while at the same time cindy sherman's work can challenge and make a statement, these photos feel contrived, just a little...too contrived.

for me, the "shock value" is gratutious, and therefore can not carry the image.

nice site though...
