I really don't have a title for this piece, yet. I snapped a photo while traveling through Massachusetts this spring. I was in the passenger's seat! NOTE: Do not take pictures while driving -- you know if I'm talking to you

I am referring to this as the under-layer. No turpenoid used on this year -- this painting is entirely alla prima. Most of this will be covered with additional layers of pastel. I have blocked in my darks. Otherwise, most of the values are midtones, except the sky. I want a rich variety of hues and tones to construct the textures in the rock face, so I am leaving my lightest values until the end in those areas.

12.5" x 18.5" on dark blue Colorfix paper.

I decided to work outdoors on my deck for the afternoon.

More to come!

Hi Paul,
Another interesting pastel painting from you. Your tonal range is beautiful, gorgeous variety of colour . This should be a very beautiful painting when finished.
Looks like you have a great little studio outside on your deck! and I noticed a CD player!!!! hehe painting without music just does not cut it with me either.... ( nice bit of greenery you have there too... cannot forget the touch of nature by your side)..... :)

Paul, this is looking good so far. I like the composition. I hope you don't have gnats in NY like we do in MD...they make painting outside a hassle!

Paul.... I'm really looking forward to seeing the finished painting.... you have created something so lovely out of a sketch that just seemed like sticks! Your colors are terrific. Donna R.
