Hi All

Couldn't resist playing about with some of my sketches from the weekend, not that thrilled with the results but I enjoyed working from them and could always paint them again.

The Charcoal and Pen

Watercolour on Pastel paper. This has some promise, perhaps I might play around with some mixed media, oil pastel might work??

Watercolour. Looks a bit unfinished so will fiddle with it or paint again.

Line and Wash. Think I will do this again and give it a dark and moody sky like the sketch!!

Nice, I like the colors and the brush work. Together each one has some extra action.

Thanks for showing the results

Joanne, your work is always a pleasure to look at! I specially like the charcoal pieces.
And your watercolour approach is lovely.

These are simply beautiful Joanne - love the muted colours - my only nit is the church painting - it looks unfinished with the space at the bottom - yet in the sketch that doesnt bother me - strange huh!!!

 Maybe part of it, on the church that Pat points out, is that on the watercolor version, the foliage is much lower and linear, pointing to the bottom of the page. On the sketch, the more straight light, and being placed higher on the page, it is more like a vignette.

But all that is small change! Joanne, these are lovely, and I appreciate seeing how you translate sketch to painting.

Lovely Joanne, funny how we see things differently unlike Pat I like the quiet area at the bottom of the church.

Joanne - I saw these quickly yesterday, but didn't want to comment on them until I could give them more time. I always get excited when I see you've posted something. The charcoal & pen of the church is lovely...great stormy sky. The wc on pastel paper of the church has a lovely softness to it. The atmosphere in each version is so different that it's hard to tell they're the same view. It's nice to see them paired like this to compare the different qualities you get with different mediums. I love the wc version of the fence and building. It has lovely tones and super background trees. I agree with you that the last wc of the boat with the buildings would look great with the stormy sky. These are just lovely...like a breath of fresh air.

I like that charcoal and pen one with the stormy sky best - very Welsh weather :)

It's a mixture I really like as it gets lovely expressive images like this.

JJ bellow is a list of size/support. Sorry I should have said!!!!!:)

Charcoal/Pen Penmon. 10/15 pastel paper
Watercolour version. 10/15 Pastel paper stretched.
Charcoal. Dovecot. 10/15 Pastel paper
Watercolour version 20/15 watercolour paper Bockingford
Graphitint Cottages 10/15 not Arches
Line and wash version 10/15 watercolour paper Bockingford.

Thanks Ben, glad you like them.:)

Hi Troutbum, how ya doin?? thanks so much for stopping to look:)

Hi Nicalas. Charcoal is my favorite medium when working outdoors, its so quick and mimics the techniques of watercolour brilliantly so I find them easy to work from, sometimes!!!!!:D

Hi Pat, glad you like em, I agree about the bottom half of the penmon painting, I like the vignette effect but feel It could handle an extra wash of warmth. Oh well there is always another piece of paper:lol:

Hi Jen I always try to paint from my sketches and am usually so keen to paint them that I rush them as I feel I did with these, I am like a child and cant wait to start!!!! I know I will return to these another day.:)

Hi Arnold, always a treat to see you have replied to my posts, thank you:D

Hi Ted, as I have said I will probably include another softer wash further down the page, perhaps when I paint it again but I too like the quiet area and wouldn't want to overwork it:)

Hi Joan, how kind you are, glad you like the softness of the church on pastel paper, you must try this, it feels strange to paint on pastel paper and it must be stretched first {something I hate doing!!!} but it is well worth the effort.
The row of cottages I am sure will appear in the gallery or gallery plus soon as I can see what needs to be done, a dark stormy sky would give great counter change against the cottage roofs and hopeful add some atmosphere. Must put it on my 'to do' list. Thanks for your great feedback:)

Hi Vivian, yes charcoal and pen is my favourite medium when on location, messy but effective.:D

Thanks Brian, you are so welcome:)

  Nice work, Joanne.

You mentioned that one of the pieces used pastel paper, stretched. Do you mind me asking what kind of pastel paper you used? The reason I am asking is I really like the Canson colored papers, but always thought that it would be to thin to stretch.

Lovely work. I like seeing how you developed the paintings from your sketches. You have inspired me to try some charcoal for sketching and the pastel paper sounds interesting. I have lots sitting unused as I prefer sanded papers for my pastel paintings.

Hi JJ, Kat, Hydie, Jake and Trish, so happy that you are enjoying this post.

Jake and JJ, The pastel paper I use is a Canson, it has to be stretched, something that I don't often do due to laziness!!!! On wetting the paper I didn't dream for one minute that it would dry flat as it rippled and looked unworkable when placed onto the board but it did!!!! when placing the first washes on the stretched paper I found it a little strange as it didn't react like normal watercolour paper would, but found that the overall effect was pleasing. I also enjoy the fact that because the paper is coloured the work achieves an overall unity with very little effort, although there is a lack of white so a little white gouache does help to pick out the highlights.

This is a painting I posted some time ago using the above methods

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/13-Jun-2007/86331-P6250136.JPG

You can see some of the paper showing through, in fact most of the distant houses are just the pastel paper with a few shaded areas. I used a Canson Moonstone, you can also see where I applied the white gouache for the highlights. Hope this is helpful:)

Lovely, soft paintings. I would not have thought to use pastel paper for watercolor in a million years. Now I can't wait to try it, thanks. Do you actually attach the paper to your board with something like tape or staples? I would have thought it would rip away as the paper dried. Amazing! I think you've given lots of us a new creative challenge.

Judi, I use gum strip, I wet the side of the tape that is gummed with a wet sponge and paste the wet paper down to the board, I also run the sponge over the top of the gum strip to make sure all areas are wet. I leave this for 24hours and cross my fingers, it very rarely fails. Good luck, I think you will enjoy the change of paper and a new challenge:D

What a difference in mood that one change in value makes!! I notice in each of these that you chose a much lighter value in the sky behind the buildings. It take a stormy day or night scene into a light and airy scene. I think that the difference in the pairs is the value change more than the medium change.

ALL are excellent - both studies and the paintings!!
