View Full Version : Loosing a gridded image

Not being much of a draughtsman I take care when squaring up a photo or drawing to get an accurate image, but everything comes unstuck when I start to apply soft pastel.

I have found that even the lightest application obscures my carefully drawn details. Help, please!

Hi

I'm not sure what the problem might be... perhaps drawing too many details in your underdrawing? I never use a grid, so maybe I'm not much help to you. I do draw a sketch if I think it is a difficult piece, or if I have no background planned for a portrait, and I need to work more carefully, otherwise I just start throwing the pastel straight on without an initial sketch. Not necessarily the best battle plan <g>. But since most of my paintings involve having the background colours also in the animal (I primarily do animals) it doesn't matter too much if I have to "push and pull" the colours around a bit if I make an error.

Maybe if you could post an example of what you mean?

Try using a little fixative on your initial drawing before applying any pastel.
