View Full Version : Update on system downtime

scottb

Hi gang - well the upgrading went very well - the servers are back online. You should notice fewer "slow downs" now. :-)

Also, some things may not quite work all the way yet (for example, the shortcut URLs at artistnation.com - yourname.artistnation.com, etc.) This is because the domain name system can sometimes take up to a week or so to fully propogate the Internet. Please, don't spam my inbox... :-) I already know.

Cheers.

Darn it all. Cutting and pasting the IP address every time I change a link is a PITA!

Hugs!

I'll be back once the DNS filters down to my end.

Scott: My mail messages to you are returned.... I can not get into to WetCanvas by using www.wetcanvas.com (http://www.wetcanvas.com) , I can, however, get in by http://wetcanvas.com ....then when I do and I click on any forum or almost any link... I am blocked ...but if I remove the www. out of the url to the forum, then I can get in. It has taken me the better part of 30 mintues to get this message in, so I hope you see it and know what the server is not working as you think. Mal tells me that those in Canada and Austraila can get in without trouble. I don't know if this has to do with the server updates or not. I am working from IE, and behind a firewall.

I continue to receive messages from those that can not get in even using the back door as I described I am using.

I am working from a pentium III pc with a cable connection. I understand that Diane Johnson can get through and she is using a MAC.

Llis - it will likely take a few days more until the DNS servers fuloly propogate through the Internet. Some areas will update quicker than others (explaining how some folks can already get in). I am monitoring it carefully ... :-)

Getting in on the www was a one of thing, thats when I jumped up and down and posted emails. Now, I am have as much trouble as everyone. Can't upload an image, can't log in to the projects and 90% of the urls are www and won't open. All the icons are broken http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/frown.gif etc. I doubt if this post will hit the mark. HUGZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Llis and others. If you really want to be able to use wetcanvas and are having trouble, you can change your hosts file (if you're using windows) and this will allow you to get in. For those brave or desperate users, here's how:

1. Find a file in your C:\windows directory called "HOSTS"
2. If there is no file called "HOSTS", there is probably one called "HOSTS.SAM"
3. Edit this file with a text editor and add this line:

204.214.92.109 www.wetcanvas.com (http://www.wetcanvas.com)

4. Save this file with the name "HOSTS" (no extension).
5. Start or re-start your browser and you should be up and running.

After wetcanvas is up everywhere you can delete the line or leave it. It won't hurt anything until wetcanvas changes ip addresses again, then you'd be stuck. http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif

Hope this helps.

Accckkk! I did exactly as Gerak warned not to! I attempted to enter the chat room and my system sure enough slowed to a crawl and eventually froze. I just rebooted and all appears fine. Other than that things seem to be going fine for me. I will not attempt chat again until i get the all clear. I know how hard you must be working Scott and i wanted to let you know that i appreciate it! I will remain patient. http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif

Hi, gang - just a quick update.

Trust me when I say that I know how frustrated many of you must feel with not being able to access the site. It appears to be a problem outside of my control. For the technically minded, the InterNIC update went in just fine, but the old CNAME record for www.wetcanvas.com (http://www.wetcanvas.com) is still lingering out there. I've resubmitted the request to the folks at InterNIC, and will keep following up on this.

Also, chat is fixed! If you can't access the site normally yet, just go to this page:
http://204.214.92.109/Community/Chat

Log in as normal. :-)

I am heading out of town tomorrow morning (Friday), but will be returning on Saturday afternoon. I'll keep monitoring this until we get it back the way we want it! :-)

Cheers.
Scott

Hi Scott,
I use two servers in new zealand.
If I log into ihug.co.nz I can access the site using either IE or netscape, but with xtra.co.nz it will not work with modem or my jetstream connection,

Well, everything should begin to normalize now. For the overly curious, here is/was the problem.

A long time ago, we registered our own name server with the InterNIC. It happened to have the same hostname and IP address as "www.wetcanvas.com". Well, an artist who started her own web site (her own domain), listed www.wetcanvas.com (http://www.wetcanvas.com) as her primary name server with the InterNIC

Well, we moved everything just fine. It *should* have worked out of the gate. However, because this artist was still listed as using "www.wetcanvas.com" as her name server (with the old IP), the InterNIC's system left a stale record out there, pointing everyone trying to get to "www.wetcanvas.com" to the old IP address, which of course, was no good anymore.

After weeks of tracking this one down, we've cleared the old host record at the InterNIC (an act of Congress if someone is still listed as using it as a name server).

It may still take a day or so for the removal of the old address to propogate, but this should do the trick...

Welcome back... http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Cheers.

I am back and passing on the HOSTS edit to everyone I know.
HOWEVER, it seems it is not running full throttle out here in the west YET.
I assume we are all safe a few more years, as a move like this should only be taken every decade or so....
Whew, it is like taking off tight shoes at the end of a hard day and plopping into an easy chair.
Happy to be home again

Just for a matter of record,

On Friday I was finally able to get in via www.wetcanvas.com (http://www.wetcanvas.com) -- this lasted until Saturday night.

As of Sunday I could no longer access and traceroutes bring up the 209.35.122.145 address again.

Just to give everyone an update. It may take another day or so for this to get resolved. This is due to the red tape I have to go through at InterNIC to force remove a name server if someone is still linked to it... :-(

Hang in there - we'll be rollin' along soon enough. http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Scott..thank you for all your hard work. My patience paid off...I've been able to get around pretty well this weekend..even posting some new work. Was in chat last night with Arlene, West, Ivyleaf, Watchful, Tony, and others...working very well. I did get booted once, but went back to the drawing table, and had NO problems when I went back to the "late-night" session in the Cafe. (btw: Scott..lol, I would have already jumped out the window...if I were attempting to do what you are doing. Just takes time..and a bit of patience for the rest of us.
Very greatful for all you have done...expect my first $installment$ by the end of next week.
