View Full Version : Different Strokes: June 2007
06-01-2007, 03:26 PM
Welcome to the June edition of Different Strokes.
Just a note before we begin :D
If any member would like to host a Different Strokes project, please let one of the Team know which month you'd like to take and we'll arrange it
Please read the guidelines below carefully.
On the first of each month a reference photo will be posted in a thread entitled "Different Strokes"
Each member interested in taking the challenge will create a painting using the chosen reference and on the 20th of each month participants will upload their interpretation of the reference for discussion within the thread, finished or not. PLEASE DO NOT UPLOAD WORK TO THE THREAD BEFORE THE 20TH OF THE MONTH.**
At the end of the month the thread /discussion will be closed and a new challenge will begin.
Artwork can be any size on any surface but MUST be acrylic. Monthly references will be selected by the guides and moderators (but please note the additional comment above:D)
**Please note, the single 'reveal' date is chosen so that we do not influence each other with our individual interpretations ...... that's the whole point of it being called 'Different Strokes'!
This month's reference is -
White Stiletto Boots (http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=405008048&context=set-72157594285216106&size=l) by Assaf.

this is interesting......might think about doing this one.
06-01-2007, 04:38 PM
this is interesting......might think about doing this one. ditto ... :)
06-01-2007, 04:45 PM
ooooh I may even try this one :)
06-01-2007, 05:57 PM
Hmmm, what size are they, and when does Assaf wear these shoes? :)
06-01-2007, 06:45 PM
Hmm...very intriguing subject...may have to give this one a go too if possible.
06-01-2007, 06:49 PM
Aha! One of my favorite photos from his website! I think I mentioned this very photo to him in a recent thread. In his website it is called "Walking on Sunshine". I may have to participate.....
06-01-2007, 08:43 PM
hmmmm, never done this before but might give it a shot.
might be tempted on this one - at the very least I now know that there is a group dedicated to photograping shoes on powerlines!!!!! :wink2:
06-02-2007, 05:50 PM
I don't know how much time I'll have to work on it, but I do have a sketch down. It may prove to be a nice break from my usual. :)
06-04-2007, 07:28 AM
This looks really challenging but will have a go.
06-07-2007, 04:52 PM
I'm just so happy right now :-)
I think of doing this also, but I promised my mom to take it easy on the paintings - we have no more walls.
When I'll move to a new place, I might get going on more acrylic paintings. In the mean time, guys, I just count the days until the 20th... Celeste, you're a star, I can't wait to see what you'll cook up.
06-07-2007, 05:29 PM
Of course Assaf, you could always do this as a miniature  :D
06-17-2007, 01:18 AM
My my my... I finally get a chance to start checking the forum again, and do a bit of painting while I get my life back in order, and find something that positively intrigues me as this month's subject matter!
06-17-2007, 02:35 AM
Update, sort of - my mom helped me find a canvas board that belonged to my sister, it's 11x14''. I'm in. It's the 17th, so I probably only post it in the weekend.
06-17-2007, 12:13 PM
Good to have you back Renee- so do join in :D
Assaf - anytime between 20th and 30th will be fine ....... I haven't even started yet!
06-18-2007, 01:21 PM
I'm not going to be able to do this after all :(
But look forward to seeing the ones that have.
06-18-2007, 07:08 PM
I have the painting for this month almost done and hope Assaf doesn't mind the changes. :D :D This one was sooo much fun to do.
Raz, so sorry you can't join in the painting but it is nice to know you can join in the viewing. Maybe next time life won't get in the way.
06-19-2007, 10:25 PM
Tomorrow's the 20th! I'm just about done. I'll be traveling again, so I sneaked it in between trips.
Looking forward to seeing what you all have done. :) Ann, you've got me really curious. ;)
06-20-2007, 07:45 AM
Hey! Where is everyone? Ok I guess I'll start. This was fun - I used a piece of MDF that was in need of being used and I took some liberties with Assaf's photo too :D .
Here's my offering.
06-20-2007, 08:17 AM
Gayle, that's beautiful!
Not much liberty taken here. :o
I'm bummed I couldn't get one photo without glare. :(
06-20-2007, 08:28 AM
This one shows a bit more of the color in the background.
06-20-2007, 08:36 AM
i haven't done an acrylics project in ages ... i wanted to do this one and the 20th creeped up on me as usual ... this time tho, i threw caution to the wind and pulled an all nighter to paint mine ... i shouldn't have painted so tired ... and on a stretched canvas ... i think painting on a smooth surface must be much easier ... anyway ... i did it ... not my best work, .... but i did it ...
06-20-2007, 08:55 AM
Gayle, I really like the way you made the shoes the focus by darkening the background. Great light and love the stitching. Good work!
Linda, your work is so painterly. I love the heels of the boots and the overall look of your painting. Well done!
Violet, I really like the darkened background and the play between the blue and orange. I think you did a terrific job.
Here is mine painted on Arches cold press watercolor paper, image size 7" x 8 1/2". I named the painting "Hot Stuff".
06-20-2007, 09:20 AM
These are so great!!
Linda - I love the background! I struggled there hence my decision to eliminate the issue with black!
Violet - Spectaular handling of the soles! You really captured the details.
Ann - Just stunning! I love the vibrancy and the addition of the boa! I can see this hanging center stage in some young girls room. You've given it that care free attitude.
06-20-2007, 09:52 AM
Violet, I love the bright blue on the background of green.
Ann, you did a smashing job, very creative!!
06-20-2007, 10:03 AM
thanks for the compliments, everyone ... if you only knew how out of my element i felt painting it !!! ... ...
gayle ... beautiful job ... however did you get those stitches done??? ... and you've such nice edges and great ties !!!!
linda ... your impressionistic version is lovely ... great subtle colours and lovely ties too!!
ann ... fabulous outrageous colours and artistic license !! ... it rocks!!
06-20-2007, 10:14 AM
Oh, oh oh!!!!! (Jumping up and down in excitement!) .........
These are all magnificent- what super interpretations -
Linda - that real night-time effect and lights through trees and lovely, lovely painting of the boots ........
Gayle - immaculate boots! someone looks after them ....really like those twisting laces too ........
Violet - so glad you took the plunge - and stayed up all night! :D
The soles are superbly observed - and the rope is great
Ann - what can I say? Looks like inks, colours for me to die for, such vibrancy - and love the feather boa to go with them!
Good job I've got mine already in mind! - otherwise i'd have been intimidated here!
Thanks ladies - for a lovely show :D
06-20-2007, 11:26 AM
Thanks all of you for the great comments. This one was really fun, fun, fun. :)
06-20-2007, 03:14 PM
Here's my offering. 18x24 on canvas. I considered doing detailed work on the stitches and on the sole but didn't actually do it. :)
06-20-2007, 03:16 PM
Gayle - great stitching and work on the soles
Linda - I like the cable/rope in yours
Violet - great rope/cable and details in the soles
Ann - hot stuff indeed! A feather boa adds the final touch :)
06-20-2007, 05:39 PM
Good job, EP. I like the addition blue decorative look on the stitch lines and the way you did the flap thingies on the top of the boot. You made the soles of the boots look worn and I like that.
06-20-2007, 05:41 PM
Wow, you have all done wonderfully! Sorry I probably won't get to join in this month either...too much going on.
06-20-2007, 05:41 PM
Thank you, Gayle, Ann, Violet, Maureen, and EP.
EP - I like the red in the background, and how the trim of bold blue gives the shoes character.
Hi everyone! wow! love everyone's boots! What fun!!!
Here's mine, 9x12" on stretched canvas.
06-21-2007, 05:08 AM
Lulu, great job :D. Love the yummy reds with those vibrant greens and yellows. I like how you zoomed in on the boots.
06-21-2007, 05:33 AM
i like the high contrast and fabulous crop too !!
06-21-2007, 06:31 AM
Hi had great fun doing these boots. Love everyones different pictures on these.
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/21-Jun-2007/78136-Boots.jpg
06-21-2007, 09:57 AM
Lulu, those are gorgeous! Ann used a good word..."yummy".:)
Gill, yours has a whimsical quality. I like the way you scratched out paint to make the bark on the tree (at least I'm assuming that's what you did). :)
06-21-2007, 10:32 AM
Yes i did scratch the paint I have this thing about trees with knots in them and bark. I am not weird its just when I paint a tree it always has to have that on it.Thanks for your comments
06-21-2007, 11:07 AM
Gill, I really like the light watercolor look of your boots, hanging out against that blue sky.
06-21-2007, 11:12 AM
Thanks I though i would add a bit of colour to the picture. It reminds me when I was little and my dad use to put white chalky shoe polish on my shoes and you had to wait for them to dry.
06-21-2007, 12:25 PM
Finished it today! Took me only two days, due to the minimal size.
The colors are a tad blurry, but overall the photo's accurate.
Maybe I'll post a better shot tomorrow. This was really fun.
06-21-2007, 01:07 PM
Hey EP, they're great boots! Love those bold blue lines and the b/ground is super.
Lulu - your gorgeous red - had to get that in somewhere! :D Like the crop too.
Gill - this does have a whimsical quality - and yes, I remember shoes having to dry when they'd been whitened!
Assaf - thanks for the ref for these works, hope you're pleased to see them:D
Like your painting too - love the colours and also the blurry back/gd!
06-21-2007, 03:24 PM
eyepaint ... i like your effects too ... the background ... the disappearing rope ... worn soles ... details aren't always needed ...
gill ... your rendition has a lovely story book feeling to it ... great job
assaf ... great colours ... great dynamic look
06-21-2007, 05:57 PM
Way to go, Assaf!! Soft, yet bold. Good match for the subject.
06-21-2007, 07:05 PM
Good work Assaf. I really like that background. The boots look terrific hanging there, very painterly.
06-21-2007, 08:03 PM
Wow where did the month go, i was going to do this!! Still am when I get time.. I LOVE the ref pic..
You guys have painted awesome boots!!
06-22-2007, 01:16 AM
This is my first time submitting a picture here, I am looking forward to next month's challenge.
06-22-2007, 01:36 AM
WOW MIKE!!!!!!!!
06-22-2007, 01:52 AM
 mike !!
06-22-2007, 05:43 AM
OK, the revised shot I told you about - used actual daylight, fresh from the farm.
9, including me, have painted... Any chance for more late-painters?
06-22-2007, 07:11 AM
Hi Mike, I enjoyed your painting and am glad you decided to do the Different Strokes project this month. Just some of the things I like about your painting are the visible brush strokes and color placement as well as the shoe string.
Assaf, thanks for posting the daylight photo of your painting too. The color cast difference between outdoor and indoor photos is amazing. I find the outdoor photos tend to wash out or make the painting lighter than it actually is. It is probably my camera though and lack of experience.
06-22-2007, 01:22 PM
ooo they are all so good. I couldn't participate this month, but I look forward to having a go next month.
06-22-2007, 02:23 PM
Oh my gosh! Wasn't this just too much fun?! Everyone did such a great job and there were some wonderfully fun liberties taken. Hopefully someone will compile them into one so we can see them all together. Loved the ref photo!
06-22-2007, 05:25 PM
This is so great! Thank you Celeste for pointing the way :) All great paintings! Maybe I will try the next one. (if it's not too complicated, lol)
06-22-2007, 05:28 PM
Mike, welcome to the forum - and so nice to see this painting - love the setting you gave the oh-so-elegant boots!
Assaf - it looks so different in this light! - like two separate paintings!
I'm still busy with mine - but will get it posted before the month is out!
When they're all in Gayle, I'll do a 'gallery'. :D
OOps - we x-posted NWiley - welcome to the forum and yes, do join in (still a week or more left on this one! :D)
06-23-2007, 01:08 AM
Thank you all for the warm welcomeand kind words
It is great to see all the different takes on the same subject
06-23-2007, 07:42 AM
This is so great! Thank you Celeste for pointing the way :) All great paintings! Maybe I will try the next one. (if it's not too complicated, lol)
You're welcome. The beautiful thing about these projects is, everyone's is "different"...if they are complicated references (like many of them are) you can simplify it. You can paint the reference however you want...however will best emphasize what you're trying to say with the painting.
Like Maureen said, there's still about a week left...maybe we can slide in "under the wire".
P.S.: Maureen's just launched a great learning thread about compositions that I hope to do too: http://wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=428578 Looks to be extremely practical and fundamental to composition planning of any subject.
06-23-2007, 02:58 PM
Celeste, I'd love to see what you would do. It's really no trouble - mine took me only a few hours, and I really like it now (and I would have never thought of painting this photo...)
PS: Maureen asked, I think, for someone to take initiative and supply a unified posting of all the paintings in 1 thread. I'll try and see hou it goes...
If it's too big, I'll try and copy all the pics, merge them to one, and fit that one in - but then they would all look very small.
06-23-2007, 08:22 PM
That is so cool I love seeing all the pics in one thread!!!
I am going to paint this Assaf, just trying to find the time. I will post it when I am finished..:)
thanks for the unified posting....
and what a subject.
wish I had seen it earlier......
06-25-2007, 11:20 AM
Cheers Assaf - thanks for grouping them together:D
Here's mine - just finished it and had to scan in two bits - so slight digi work where the join showed on the left side!
06-25-2007, 12:38 PM
Lulu - great use of complimentary colours. I didn't recognize your new avatar
Gill - lots of detail in the background
Assaf - I like your blurred background and the soles of the shoes
Mike - Great treatment of the trees in the background on yours
Maureen - wowee zowee - Your reminds me of the Austin Powers movies
06-26-2007, 02:26 PM
Here's the Mini Gallery -
I'll add any more if they come in later :D
06-26-2007, 03:29 PM
What terrific art work everyone did. It is great to see them in the mini-gallery. So glad you did this for us Maureen, thanks!
06-27-2007, 06:26 AM
Maureen, Thanks! It looks like a great poster for a shoe show or something.
06-27-2007, 01:58 PM
Well, for a project I didn't think I'd do, this came out nice. I had the mini-canvas framed for 80 nis (round 20$), and hung it on my wall, next to my white flower macro.
Here's how it looks like.
06-27-2007, 02:22 PM
  :D
06-28-2007, 01:56 AM

06-28-2007, 06:25 AM
Great job everyone.
06-28-2007, 06:32 AM
Celeste, what's up?
Why don't you paint us a late edition? ;-)
06-28-2007, 08:42 PM
WOW, what fabulous paintings.........I did paint mine, however my nephew has my camera and I can't get my rendition on line.....hopefully he will return it tomorrow or early Saturday.............
Assaf: your rendition is GORGEOUS
Lulu: great colors
Violet: great job (as always)
Maureen: wow, what a mind to think of that, love it
Mike: I really like the trees
Gil: background is fantastic
Gayle: you have great soles
Ann: ditto "hot stuff indeed"
Linda: so real, very nice
after seeing everyone's not sure I care about getting my camera......wonder if I could scan the canvas board??? LOL
was a fun project this month, thanks for doing it...
06-28-2007, 08:43 PM
love that mini exhibit !! ... and how your shoes match the macro assaf !! ... and yeah, celeste ... we'd love to see your rendition !! ... :) ... and linda ! ... you as always are toooo kind !! ... ... but thanks!! .... and !!! .... do post yours !! ... we'd love to see it too !!
06-29-2007, 06:23 AM
Thanks Assaf and Violet. I actually was sketching this out last night when I realized that my pet, Zoe had some sort of terrible allergic reaction to something and had huge hives all over her body. Spent 2 hours in the ER and when I got home, needed to paint something to wind down, but not enough time to launch a new project...so maybe tonight will work on it...
06-29-2007, 07:26 AM
Linda, I hope you get your camera back so we can enjoy seeing your painting. Thanks for the comment about the shoes.
Celeste, hope Zoe is better this morning and maybe you will get a chance to paint boots sometime soon.
Assaf, the boots painting looks great hanging on your wall.
06-29-2007, 08:15 AM
 I am half way through mine..;)
06-29-2007, 01:30 PM
Thanks Ann...plans are to try to work on boots tonight!
06-29-2007, 03:53 PM
Hey JJ - is the 'halfway' nearly the full way now:D ..... I'll leave the thread open anyway so you can add - you too Celeste ........ won't close it until you both - and Linda - have managed to upload:D
06-29-2007, 05:58 PM
Thanks Maureen...I'll let you know ASAP if I can't manage to get one done.
06-29-2007, 08:08 PM
Thanks Maureen I appreciate that. I tis school holidays here and I have had the kids so painting wasn't happening. I hope to finish it today or tomorrow. I like it too..:D Might so a series..:p
06-29-2007, 08:30 PM
OK, I put the canvas board on the scanner and it actually worked...so here's my effort for the month.
Until next month, stay well and keep painting.
06-29-2007, 08:33 PM
JJ, looking forward to see your boots strut their stuff, as well as Celeste's.
Linda, you did a really fine job on those boots. I had the hardest time with the stitching area while you painted yours to look so natural and easy to do. Well done!
06-29-2007, 11:16 PM
Okay, Assaf and those who urged me to participate, this is a sorry, sad attempt...but oh well, I joined in, albeit last minute! 9" x 12"
06-29-2007, 11:29 PM
Linda: A pretty blue background to set off the crisp white of the boots.
Celeste: A very confident use of paint in this one. Good fit for the boots!
06-30-2007, 12:01 AM
I loved painting this so much I am going to paint a series..:D
Gallery wrapped canvas 12" x 16" M.Graham Acrylics..
06-30-2007, 12:02 AM
Linda Celeste yours are awesome both of them!!
I have really enjoyed seeing everyones shoes and how differently we all painted them. Awesome!!!
06-30-2007, 12:05 AM
JJ: Wow! Neat use of color. I'll look foward to seeing more in your series! This was a lot of fun. :)
06-30-2007, 07:19 AM
Celeste, good job putting it all together so quickly. I like the sureness of your brushwork.
JJ, way to go on those terrific boots. I like the color palette you used very much.
06-30-2007, 08:16 AM
Wonderful job everyone...so nice to see all the "Different Strokes"!
06-30-2007, 09:01 AM
Celeste, that was a Van-Gogh experience. I absolutely love it. The angular lines and the hot red are magic.
Judy-joy - the purple is a good choice, with the complementary yellow. Very sharp.
pequan - The deep blue background looks great, gives a strong depth feeling.
Since this is the last day, I'm thinking of updating the composite picture We saw earlier. I'll cook something up.
06-30-2007, 09:26 AM
Thanks Assaf...you're too kind...glad you liked it.
06-30-2007, 09:30 AM
Cooked somthing up. For those stuck in the sardin can uptop - I'm with you.
13 seems like a magic number. Prime, and all.
06-30-2007, 12:46 PM
fabulous additions to all the wonderful boots !! ... great capture of all of them ... fun project.... thanks assaf and all !!
06-30-2007, 04:24 PM
Glad you managed ladies :D
These boots are definitely (not) made for walking!
Linda - really like the white suede effect and beautifully drawn heels - I got mine out of proportion
Celeste - what I really like about this are the chunky brushstrokes - nice 'solid' boots!
Purple bootees JJ - wow! funky! - love the background too ........ great that these/this ref inspired you to more:D
Another good DS draws to a close - well, I liked them all!
Ready for tomorrow's ref? :D
06-30-2007, 07:54 PM
Wow Assaf they look great all in one thread. 13 is a GOOD number..:) Thank you for your lovely comments.
Maureen yes i love this ref, I have almost finished #2..:) Bit smaller this time, painting them 12 x 16. :) That background wasn't supposed to be like that, my brush took over, but I really like it too..:) thanks..g/f..:)
Wow - guys - fantastic variety in this one - you have all produced excellent versions. Love the dramatic complimentary colour schemes a lot of you have developed -    to you all.
07-01-2007, 07:25 AM
Very well done everyone.
Am hoping I can join in the July one.
