View Full Version : Different Strokes: June 2007

Welcome to the June edition of Different Strokes.
Just a note before we begin :D
If any member would like to host a Different Strokes project, please let one of the Team know which month you'd like to take and we'll arrange it
Please read the guidelines below carefully.
GUIDELINES:
On the first of each month a reference photo will be posted in a thread entitled "Different Strokes"
Each member interested in taking the challenge will create a painting using the chosen reference and on the 20th of each month participants will upload their interpretation of the reference for discussion within the thread, finished or not. PLEASE DO NOT UPLOAD WORK TO THE THREAD BEFORE THE 20TH OF THE MONTH.**
At the end of the month the thread /discussion will be closed and a new challenge will begin.
Artwork can be any size on any surface but MUST be acrylic. Monthly references will be selected by the guides and moderators (but please note the additional comment above:D)
**Please note, the single 'reveal' date is chosen so that we do not influence each other with our individual interpretations ...... that's the whole point of it being called 'Different Strokes'!
This month's reference is -
White Stiletto Boots (http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=405008048&context=set-72157594285216106&size=l) by Assaf.

I'm just so happy right now :-)
I think of doing this also, but I promised my mom to take it easy on the paintings - we have no more walls.
When I'll move to a new place, I might get going on more acrylic paintings. In the mean time, guys, I just count the days until the 20th... Celeste, you're a star, I can't wait to see what you'll cook up.

My my my... I finally get a chance to start checking the forum again, and do a bit of painting while I get my life back in order, and find something that positively intrigues me as this month's subject matter!

Update, sort of - my mom helped me find a canvas board that belonged to my sister, it's 11x14''. I'm in. It's the 17th, so I probably only post it in the weekend.

i haven't done an acrylics project in ages ... i wanted to do this one and the 20th creeped up on me as usual ... this time tho, i threw caution to the wind and pulled an all nighter to paint mine ... i shouldn't have painted so tired ... and on a stretched canvas ... i think painting on a smooth surface must be much easier ... anyway ... i did it ... not my best work, .... but i did it ...

Gayle, I really like the way you made the shoes the focus by darkening the background. Great light and love the stitching. Good work!
Linda, your work is so painterly. I love the heels of the boots and the overall look of your painting. Well done!
Violet, I really like the darkened background and the play between the blue and orange. I think you did a terrific job.
Here is mine painted on Arches cold press watercolor paper, image size 7" x 8 1/2". I named the painting "Hot Stuff".

These are so great!!
Linda - I love the background! I struggled there hence my decision to eliminate the issue with black!
Violet - Spectaular handling of the soles! You really captured the details.
Ann - Just stunning! I love the vibrancy and the addition of the boa! I can see this hanging center stage in some young girls room. You've given it that care free attitude.

These are all magnificent- what super interpretations -
Linda - that real night-time effect and lights through trees and lovely, lovely painting of the boots ........
Gayle - immaculate boots! someone looks after them ....really like those twisting laces too ........
Violet - so glad you took the plunge - and stayed up all night! :D
The soles are superbly observed - and the rope is great
Ann - what can I say? Looks like inks, colours for me to die for, such vibrancy - and love the feather boa to go with them!
Good job I've got mine already in mind! - otherwise i'd have been intimidated here!

Lulu - your gorgeous red - had to get that in somewhere! :D Like the crop too.

Hi Mike, I enjoyed your painting and am glad you decided to do the Different Strokes project this month. Just some of the things I like about your painting are the visible brush strokes and color placement as well as the shoe string.
Assaf, thanks for posting the daylight photo of your painting too. The color cast difference between outdoor and indoor photos is amazing. I find the outdoor photos tend to wash out or make the painting lighter than it actually is. It is probably my camera though and lack of experience.

You're welcome. The beautiful thing about these projects is, everyone's is "different"...if they are complicated references (like many of them are) you can simplify it. You can paint the reference however you want...however will best emphasize what you're trying to say with the painting.
Like Maureen said, there's still about a week left...maybe we can slide in "under the wire".
P.S.: Maureen's just launched a great learning thread about compositions that I hope to do too: http://wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=428578 Looks to be extremely practical and fundamental to composition planning of any subject.

Celeste, I'd love to see what you would do. It's really no trouble - mine took me only a few hours, and I really like it now (and I would have never thought of painting this photo...)
PS: Maureen asked, I think, for someone to take initiative and supply a unified posting of all the paintings in 1 thread. I'll try and see hou it goes...
If it's too big, I'll try and copy all the pics, merge them to one, and fit that one in - but then they would all look very small.

Glad you managed ladies :D
These boots are definitely (not) made for walking!
Linda - really like the white suede effect and beautifully drawn heels - I got mine out of proportion
Celeste - what I really like about this are the chunky brushstrokes - nice 'solid' boots!
Purple bootees JJ - wow! funky! - love the background too ........ great that these/this ref inspired you to more:D
Another good DS draws to a close - well, I liked them all!
Ready for tomorrow's ref? :D

Wow Assaf they look great all in one thread. 13 is a GOOD number..:) Thank you for your lovely comments.
Maureen yes i love this ref, I have almost finished #2..:) Bit smaller this time, painting them 12 x 16. :) That background wasn't supposed to be like that, my brush took over, but I really like it too..:) thanks..g/f..:)
Wow - guys - fantastic variety in this one - you have all produced excellent versions. Love the dramatic complimentary colour schemes a lot of you have developed -    to you all.
