I've been doing a lot of sketching for the scavenger hunts over in "Artwork from Life." This was done in a small 5 x 7 sketchbook with sepia ink. Then I used a waterbrush and touched it to watercolor crayons to apply the color.

Lovely sketch Joan, like the addition of colour. Often find if I do small sketches then I sketch more often.

Doug - Thank you.
Ted - I originally was going to leave this as a pen & ink, but then I decided to try adding color. I'm happy I did. Thanks.
Marcia - Thanks. It was a great day at the beach and I did a few sketches. This was the only one that I added color to that day. I made a promise to myself that since I spend so much time at the beach in the summer, I would take a sketch pad and draw something every day. I threw in my watercolor crayons too just in case I got the urge to do color. I like the way they work with the waterbrush.

Vivien - Thanks. Since I spend so much time at the beach from now until Sept. I figured I'd better work there so I do something.

Don't be afraid of shade and shadow.
The sun creates very strong shadow and shade.
Next time squint.
You will see darks and lights.

Meimei - Thank you. This started out as a simple sketch of the woman and then sort of kept growing as I added the umbrellas, and then the bucket. At that point I knew I had to add the color too.

Great sketch Joan, those crayons are not easy to use. Isn't it fun to paint from life?

Jim - Thanks so much.
Nancy - There are many models at the beach, but someone needs to teach them how to hold a pose. Thanks for looking and commenting.
Ken - Thank you.
Joanne - Thanks. The wc crayons were working out ok, but I started bringing my W&N field kit and small scraps of wc paper too. The sketchbook paper didn't handle the water well enough. It's fun to try and capture the people, but frustrating too.
Pat - Thanks.
Kat - Glad you like it. Thank you.
