This is lovely .. just a thought .. how about a hint of blue in the sky to carry your blue factor through the entire piece? You seem to have suggestions of strong sunlight with your shadows and highlites so perhaps a little tad of blue might help that matter along. I know it isn't necessary as the sky can be different colors and values at different levels but just as an additive.

Wayne,

Perhaps the original is more blue than the photo I shot. There is a plane of indigo/cobalt mix under the layer of white. When I paint, I let the scene dictate the outcome. It was an overcast day with periods of hot sun. The sky had a cool grey....

What do you like about it?

I like the concept, application and the overall coloring .. it is peaceful and tranquil with a pleasing harmony. The only thing that seems not to register is the strong shadow from the eve of the house and the white highlites against such a sombre sky .. but as I said, that is only a preference on the use of artistic liscense.

I grew up with the ocean being a stone's throw away so this piece I find very warm even though it has a predominance of cold color .. if that makes any sense .. it stirs a lot of memories.

I love the painting and I'm in awe of anyone who can accomplish such detail while painting plein air! It makes me think of a hazy mist in the air sort of day...the sky fits with that.

Check your perspective on the front right building...it seems a bit off...but again, I'd never attempt this in plein air! That one bright bit of orange/red really jumps out.

Gavin, Yep. That's Greenport, alright. I can taste the shrimp now!

Greatest cajun catfish ever at the Rhumline Restaurant and the best potato pancakes at the little German Kitchen, down the block.

Do you show at Island Art?

Very Nice painting.

This is a wonderful painting. It looks like La Connor here in WA. I can relate to the sky, the salty air...You get an A+ from me. I admire anyone who can do buildings and give them character without making them look like cartoons (that's what happens to my buildings)...especially plein aire. Good job!

Gavin, Inspired by your painting and my talk about the yummy Rhumbline restaurant, my husband and I took a long drive out to Greenport on this beautiful spring day.

To our dismay, the Rhumbline is out of business and the German Kitchen is now a sushi bar.

Wound up having a yummy Lobster Scampi lunch at Claudios.

Did you take liberties with your composition? In actuality, from the view facing the water, that would be Crabby Jerrys on the left and Claudio's outdoor terrace on the right, correct? Whatever, it works just fine.

Impressionist2-

I am so flattered! This spurred a jaunt to Greenport? Wonderful! I am out there this weekend, my family has a house in Cutchogue.

I was out on Claudios outdoor terrace, opposite Crabby Jerry's. The building on the right is Prestons. I pretty much paint what I see, taking stylistic liberties....I do not change what I see architectural.

Island Art- Is that the Hamptons outdoor show?

Too bad about your haunts shifting hands....I remember both restaurants well.

Is there a website for La Conner's work? Thank you very much for your warm comments. I have a history in cartooning/illustration and I am very happy to have shed that stereotype. It is tough to break the cycle, you have to unlearn what you 'think' you already know.

Iseiler-
Thank you my brother! I checked out your website, and I like what I see. I too can relate to the musician in me...plein air is like performing on stage....nature is the muse.

Not to worry, I havemany more up my sleave!

Linda-
Thank you so much.

CHClements-
Oh thank yoU! I like to be in awe of. The perspective might be wacky, ten aGAin, so am I. I paint what I feel mixed with the passion of what I see....without too much judgement, I finish on site. I'm not so interested in technical accuracy...moreso the overall feeling.

Waye-
Thanks for clarifying. You have a good eye and keen critique sense...that's why i didnt let you off the hook! I agree about the two thing you mentioned, although as stated earlier, I am more about the feeling mixed with the moment and what I see. Like therapy I get past all the blocks (hopefully) and create a piece in my own style with some prowess passed down to me through dead masters.

Thank you all for your warm comments! More are welcome.

I'm sorry, I should have been more clear. La Conner is a really darling little fishing town, a tourist attraction, and artist community in Washington. This painting reminded me of it.

I think you enjoyed painting this. It shows!! I understand your comments about painting outdoors re the stage performance. Nice analogy. I like this painting because it is both a place and a landscape but above all a painting. Hope that makes some sort of sense. Admire your work muchly.

Gavinart . thank you very much

I noticed the off perspective that Sandra keyed on as well but to me that is not a problem as it's rare to see a fishing shack that doesn't lean or bend being as they are usually made of scraps of left overs or materials from other scrapped buildings.

Thanks for the pleasant memories.

Carly and Wayne,

Greenport is a charming Old town. Things do lean and sway there.

Gavin has really captured the Feel of the town. Plus, he has it painted on a cloudy day ( looks like to me ) and there are more of those than sunny ones.

It reminds me of Fallmouth, Mass.. Old creaking docks and wonderful little shops. Plus, I Love the town's little houses 3 feet off the sidewalks with their little picket fences.

Gavin, You are so lucky to have permanent lodging so you can really capture the town. Island Artists Gallery is a cooperative gallery on Main Street ( do a google search for the phone number). Rick Fieldler ( the sand and rocks guy) is one of their main artists.

I see what your perspective was. Talk about being able to turn in all directions and get yet another painting!!

Renee-

I just came back from your website. Wonderful work! I love your portraits and plein aires.

Glad you enjoy my work. My lodgings are a definite plus. Unfortunately I live in Manhattan, and have to journey out East weekly to to this series.

The area has been built up so much in the past ten years, it's scary!

I have not pursued Island art, as I have an exclusive with Gallery Pelar. I might put some prints n consignment there, or if things fall through with my other gallery. Thanks for the info!

Wonderful painting. We have a wharf here with some boats tied up, and this painting of yours is giving me inspiration to go there and paint in that area. Yax

Gavin, Thank you very much. I will take that comment gladly from an artist with such an impressive website of his own!

Were you by any chance the artist who, about five years ago, did the Marisol and Julio subway cartoon strips? I worked in the city for a while and always noticed them.

I'll have to check Gallery Pelar out next time I am in Greenport. Is it on Main Street?

I am going to have to let Mario in the oil forum know about your portraits. That style is one he favors. Excellent work.

As the Hamptons become glutted , the North Fork is eyed ravenously by the intruders. Building will skyrocket over the next ten years and then the hordes will have to head north of the city, as they do even now. Any pristine land must be developed and the land gutted. It's the American Builders way.
