I have been experiementing with alternate surfaces. Thought I would share this. It is Masa paper (form of rice paper) bonded to illustration board with matt medium. Not alot of preplanning just some rough shapes from memory. An experiement that was kinda fun to play with
10 x 18ish Masa on Illustration Board W/N paints.

Mike,
Lovely effect from the Masa paper. I really like the way you've painted the canyon and the scrub brush. The orangy brown and deep green really work well together.

Very cool! I like experimenting too as a break between other paintings, it's funny to go a little "crazy" sometimes! :-)

Convincing texture and drop. I hope we didn't lose anyone down there.

:) Yes Mike, experimenting does help to free you up, I know it works for me.
Again you have produced an interesting rock study using the rice paper and washes, it is great how the folds and creases of the paper form textured cracks in the rocks.....interesting. If you want to try a medium with watercolour that doesn't allow for detail try oil pastel ,this really does give the work that 'loose/free' feel to it.

Mike - You did a good job on this. I only worked on masa paper once, but it gives really great texture. Have you tried yupo yet? That's fun to experiment with too. Nice job!!

Hey Mike! This is fun. You've gotten some great cracked rock going...and also a sense of depth.

Mike, I really like this! Especially effective for the cracks in the foreground rocks.
