View Full Version : Plein Air at the Marsh!
05-01-2007, 01:47 PM
I haven't posted in a bit. I just got back from a wonderful painting trip to the South carolina coast and thought I'd share a little plein air painting I did. This one is 5x7 on Wallis. I had a lot of fun doing a bunch of quick little studies. I think I did 12 that day and I would have done more if it didn't get dark! As always I welcome your comments!

I love your color choices and this is so sweet!!! Did you underpaint the wallis or is it white underneath?

Thanks Shari! It is white wallis. I think I just did a first layer with nupastels and rubbed it in so that was my underpainting. I finished it with Ludwigs and Great Americans, my current favorites!

Wow Karen, I love this. The greens and purples playing off each other, the water peeking through. Just the impact of it, even knowing its small size. Enjoy your work immensely.

That is absolutely beautiful. Accurate and loose at the same time. Great colorscale.

I would have guessed this is yours, Karen! I love your style and the way you handle color. It seems to me that you really paint with pastels and hardly ever need to use line. You did 12 in one day? I hope you'll show us more!

I'll echo the other's comments... Beautiful colours, and beautiful painting!

Thank you all so much!!! It's always good to hear when something seems to work. I know I enjoyed painting the marsh and wish I could have stayed longer!

Love the color palette, so perfect for a marsh scene. I have a friend who was in a workshop on the coast - were you in that workshop?

Beautiful colors and I love the feel of this!

Karen...Thank you so much!
Kat...Thanks! I wasn't at a workshop though that would have been fun! I went with a couple of my painting friends. We try to get away a couple times of year. It makes it affordable to share the expenses.

Beautiful as always Karen, and 12 paintings in one day! isn't it wonderful to holiday with other painting friends, they understand us.

Show us more, Karen!
I like the palette, the looseness and the way you've used strokes to make it all readable. As always, I have a thought for you, but it's totally hyper-picky, considering how nice this one is. It's the 'teacher' part of me--I can't escape it. So, take or leave it... but just as a thought, if you used a few smaller horizontal strokes in the distance it might make the plane flatten out just a wee bit more.
(I hope people don't start to duck and run, thinking 'there she goes, always picking every painting apart'!! I can't help it. I do the same thing with writing. I drive my husband nuts pointing out spelling errors in my Bible and syntactical boo-boos on billboards! It's a gift and a curse, but happily I'm NOT perfect. I blow it all the time. Whew! But still, please forgive if I offend...)

Love your style! The color is lively and I like the abstract shapes that lead the eye into and around the painting. Twelve in one day is amazing!

How freely and succintly it's done...thanks for sharing it...

Karen, you know I'm one of your biggest fans. I haven't seen a single thing you have done that I have not loved. Where are the other 11? :D
One of these days I might actually have to break down and *buy* one of your works!

This is luscious! The colors are gorgeous...super job!
I often stay away from commenting on landscapes as I rarely do any myself and would not be able to say anything useful. Same applies here...nothing useful to say...but....I just wanted to say that this is so lovely!! Love the looseness while it remains tidy and neat, love the colours as its very atmospheric but not too sweet, this is something I'd put on my wall. Curious about the other 11....;)
