Hi, everybody!
I usually hang out in the Glass Art forum. I've recently started to change my focus in glass to include more sculpture. So this mermaid/mermen challenge is great! I'll post a pic once I get something done that I like.
Thanks!

Hi Mary Beth, great to see you here! Can't wait to see what you create in glass within this theme! Val
Thanks, Val! I took a great workshop with Ginny Sycuro a couple of weeks ago and she helped me get past a couple of difficult points that I had encountered when trying this type of sculpture. So I am eager to put my new knowledge to the test!

I'm not sure, but I may do the Waterhouse mermaid. She has always been a favorite of mine. Anybody have any ideas yet what they are working on?
I want to do a mermaid with a long tail, lol, I don't know why, I want to go
find a fish market and buy a fish, but I don't paint that fast, and I am sure
the smell of fish would speed me up. What a way to go. :) Either that or go to Wallymart and watch the tanks of little fishy for inspiration.

Dreaming about mermaids last night and how to draw them.
Did anyone see the thing online about their bones?
Anyway, tomorrow or tonight I'm starting?
Charging the camera batteries too. lol!
Did I mention I am fighting with the ground color?
I don't know which to pick either, a cool pink or a cool blue
or do I want to go more vintage with a cool red like indian?
or now really do I want to go warm? that's an even bigger question.

I haven't been by wetcanvas to visit for awhile - and I generally hang out and post on the Miniature Art thread, anyway. But I saw your mermaid challenge and was just so tickled: I've done some mermaid paintings in past years, but haven't had the inclination to paint one recently. The chances of me doing a mermaid in the next month are going to be stiff, so I hope you don't mind if I post something from a couple of years ago - just for token sake.
Thanks

Hi everybody. This Month's challenge is perfect for my lated artwork. I admit, i did it just for fun, before i knew the subject. but it fits perfectly.
Odysseus and the mermaids
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/07-May-2007/49949-ulisse_sirene_rid.jpg
After leaving Circe the sorceress, to return home, Odysseus has to next pass the Island of the Sirens, whose beautiful voices enchanted all who sailed near. ‘Plug your men’s ears with bees-wax,’ had advised Circe, ‘and if you are eager to hear their music, have your crew bind you hand and foot to the mast, and make them swear not to let you escape, however harshly you may threaten them.’… As the ship approached Siren Land, Odysseus took Circe’s advice, and the sirens sang so sweetly, promising him foreknowledge of all future happenings on earth, that he shouted to his companions, threatening them with death if they would not release him; but, obeying his earlier orders, they only lashed him tighter to the mast. Thus the ship sailed by in safety, and the sirens committed suicide for vexation.

This is a drawing from a book I have, I always thought it would make a good reference for a mermaid, when I saw this month's theme I just had to try something with it.
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/11-May-2007/81870-SWScan00039.jpg
I scanned it and played with it in Photoshop to work out composition and to use as a guide for painting. I ended up using elements from about 5 different images and came up with this..
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/11-May-2007/81870-mermaid10.jpg
I cut some canvas to the same format and started painting. I did a few first's on this one, I didn't do any drawing first, it's my weak point. I blocked in the sky water and rocks then wiped out the silhouette for the mermaid, once it looked right I painted her in. Usually I spend weeks on a painting and paint the life out of it. With this one I started at about 4pm and kept painting to about 4am. I am tempted to try to improve parts once it dries but am forcing myself to leave it as is. I also cropped about 5 inches of the lefthand side and by the time I got the edge straight I had taken too much off. So I think I've learned a lot from this challenge ; )
Enough rambling, here's the painting..
Oil on canvas 16x12
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/11-May-2007/81870-mermaid12.jpg
Please excuse the small size and quality of the photo, my camera is stuck in video mode so I had to record, upload to the PC and take a screen capture.

royc8, malvasia: yes Yop is waterproof (that is why the probably wash job) it is actually a type of thin plastic, the paint pools and mixes and you have to leave it flat so it will dry, or it it turns out a mess you can wash it all off and start again
nickel: no, they took everything sharp away from me, the mermaid is safe (exept from a hose)
royce8, love your composition and work!!

Nickel - that's a great ref and I like how your painting is coming along. You said it was oils - what size is it?
Marianne - fantastic undersea atmosphere in yours
finleyboyd - that's some creature! Merepeople may have mutts that like to swim, like labs and portugese water dogs!
Malvasia - the colours are so vibrant in your painting
Artastic - an interesting set of textures on your painting. How do you work with Yupo?
Roy - your painting is fantastic! Love the splash against the rocks at the bottom and the light hazy sky just above the horizon line. Thank you for showing the progression.
Cheers,

Hi all, I'm very new to WetCanvas and I'm still not sure what I'm doing. I'd love to enter this challenge. I just need a few things cleared up. By clasical art does that mean the media you use or the style of painting? (Would drawing be excepted rather than digital art?)
Sorry to seem like I'm asking obvious questions but I don't want to break rules and get off to a bad start.

05-13-2007, 10:21 AM
here is another Yupo mermaid, (I washed off the original and tried again)
eyepaint: you just wet an area, drop in some color and let it mix by tipping the paper (plastic) this way and that, you have to dry it flat or it all runs off
it is very fragile (because the paint sits on top) and can easily be messed up

05-13-2007, 12:01 PM
Artastic - Yupo sounds fun but possibly frustrating. Sounds like it needs to lay in a frame of some sort that you can tip this way and that but has edges so the paint doesn't run off and make a mess of the floor / counter / table / clothing. Your second version has some interesting green texture in the top left but I think I liked the wild hair in the first version a wee bit better :)

Hi Wallflower Girl, classical means style or media. This is a subject forum that is not per se strick classical. Let us know if you have any more questions, but just go ahead and show us your mer-mer-mer
Come discuss techniques, share tips, post work and enjoy the fellowship of like minds working in various media. Anything Recognizable: Academic, Impressionistic, Naturalism, Contemporary Realism, Representational, Romanticism, Symbolic Realism and Traditional styles are all welcome.

There are so many wonderful pieces here already.
Nickel - your mermaid is very close to how I envision mine. I love the simplicity of your portrait. The second version is just lovely!
For mine I am thinking red hair and a silver tail. I have already chosen my glass colors for the hair - it is a mix of several. The silver tail will either have silver encased in glass or added as fine silver on the surface. I almost have her all worked out in my mind. Next I will make a sketch and then I will try a prototype.
Marianne - your mermaid is just so elegant. She could walk down any street in any town (if she could walk) and no one would dare to say a thing!
finleyboyd - I like your merdog! Wonderful sketch.
Malvalsia - beautiful! Everything looks so liquid like it should be:)
Artastic - that's great! It's so lively and I love the hair. The second version is cool also.
Roy - I can fell the sea air in yours. She feels isolated though. .
Judy - oh a yellowtail! She's speeding away.:D Very nice!
I really loved looking at everyone's challenge pieces so far. Now I do feel inspired to see what I can do in glass! Maybe I'll have something in the next few days:)

Well I decided that for my first pictures ever posted on these boards I'd go for something different. I thought about the challenge of Mermaids and decided to go for something different to the first image I had in my head.
This Picture was my first attempt. I decided that there were so many other forms of fish out there that I should try to create a mix of human and fish that was using a different kind of fish.
So here's my merman.
Damn.:envy:
My connectionisn't fast enough to upload my pictures. I will upload my 3 mer people as soon as I can get to mum's and use her broadband.

Hello, I'm pretty new around here, and I'm hoping to make my first post with this month's challenge; I have a pretty good idea I think, for some mermen daily life kind of stuff.
But, I wanted to say, I adore the little pet Octopus bringing his bone over to the mermen, he really looks earnest and like he wants to play fetch. That little touch made the whole picture for me. :) Wonderful!

Lynnd - ah - thank you
Susan - what a regal mermaid on your coat of arms
Azul - great study. Quick question - should we each have at least tried sketching this Waterhouse mermaid painting?
Cheers,

Really great mermaids, everyone! I really wanted to participate in this challenge, but I realize it is the end of the month and all I have is this sketch. I do hope I will finish this one and that it will not go into my ever increasing pile of unfinished drawings. Oh, and thanks azulparsnip--I really liked this challenge!

Anne - I like the softness in your mermaid. Also yours has a more appropriated sized backside than my mermaid had :)

Donna
Hi Donna, lol, I agree the pet Octopus is adorable. I hope you can join us in the June challenge at least to see what Azul will pet next :) Nickel

I certainly will join the June challenge; but I'm sad, my merman isn't quite finished and I don't know if I'll be able to post him before midnight comes. :(
Oh well!
Maybe I'll post it in another thread relevant to undersea stuff. lol
Can't wait to do the horses. I know just what I'm going to do!

This is my first post, and I wanted to dive right into this thread. I tend to be somewhat vibrant with color, and as you can see just can't lay off the cadmiums.

Hi Greg! welcome and thanks for making your first post here in classicals!
Oh wow, look at that sky!!! So beautiful! I like cadmiums too!
Thanks for getting wet so to speak and jumping in to our mermaid
challenge! Your mermaid is quiet the splash!
I like the way you have posed her and the way the wind is playing with her hair! The only thing you didn't show is the shipwreck she caused :)
