A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: May: Animal Art Project
Project Leader: animal
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Any Type
Medium: Any Medium
Subject: Wildlife
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

Using the reference image provided, produce your work of art.

Do show your progress images and tell us what techniques you are using to complete your work. If you like, you can do both images!

You can work in watercolors, oils, pastel, acrylics, or perhaps you want to draw or sculpt. Any medium you choose will be good for us to discuss.

I've started a thread in the Wildlife Forum so we can talk about our progress and share information.

Remember, you are to only use the reference image below.
The object of this project is to work from one reference photograph and for all of us to see how we all accomplish this task and to share our knowledge.

Be sure to post progress pics in the special thread, or inside this project, and be sure to tell us what you are doing and why.

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=195)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Hi all,

Looks like everyone so far loves the puppy, but I can't resist that blue and gold macaw. He's begging for me to paint him. Thanks for hosting this animal.

I might do both. I love the color of the bird. That blue is beautiful. It will be a challange to mix that color just right. I also love the puppy. I won't be able to start until at least Monday.

brr..the weather did a change for the worse and no plein airing for me. This will be good studio work and I've been meaning to do some animals.

Thanks for the inspiration animal!

This is my first image loaded as progress in any project. Sorry but I uploaded the image before writing the comment. I put it here: I will draw the dog with pen and ink. This is the drawing I do before with pencil HB, with all the shadows. The original has more shadows but the scanner is not very good.

5 x 6" on strathmore 500 Series Imperial watercolor cold press 140# paper. Started out doing it in graphite but couldn't get it dark enough and didn't like the graphite effect on this paper so i switched to charcoal. Took about 70ish minutes to complete.

ROCK!

Alot of blending, layering, glazing and luck!!!
Never touched pastels. Mainly work in acrylic but started watercolour(for the postcard exchanges), graphite, white china pencil and charcoal pencils a touch. See there are pastel pencils. Dont know if they work differently then the regular sticks.
Thanks orchid!!!!!

Sorry everyone. It is taking me so long to find my way around this huge site and I didn't realise that these discussions were happening. I will learn eventually.
Orchid....thanks....it's watercolour.
KarenU.... dolors and DraigArther ....Thankyou for your kind comments.
Caron..... I had so many problems with those kneck feathers you wouldn't believe :( . I was messing about with them for ages and still couldn't get them right. So I would be delighted if you would pm me with any info you have.
I have already tried another picture of the parrot for the postcard project and I am not really happy with that either, ( neck feathers again).
Once again apologies for being so late posting

Well I've been off wetcanvas for several months due to a SLOW modem connection, but I am back up and running on DSL for the last few days and am so happy to be back on WC! I'll have to upload some new stuff soon. I am excited to see that Animal chose my photo of the yellow Lab puppy for one of this months reference images!

A bit of background on the puppy for any who are interested. His name is Ramsey and he was about 10 weeks old in the picture. He is a guide dog puppy in training who was raised by my parents. He goes back for his final guide work training this week :crying: He is their fifth guide dog puppy to raise and I'm guessing anotehr one will follow! Everyone think good thoughts about Ramsey's guide dog training!

Have fun drawing Ramsey...I wish I had time to jump in on this project....but two commissions are waiting too.

Smile

This is my entry of the mcaw. My art tutor used bright purple acrylic and pastel primer as the base of some of his recent paintings. The colours of the pastels really vibrated in his final paintings. He had a bright blue pastel background over top on one purple underpainting. I thought I'd have a go and prepared the watercolour paper with bright red acrylic paint and primer. It shines thru under the white of the birds' face which my hubby likes.
I am going to try the puppy now, and have painted and primed my paper with blue this time to see what happens.

Ink and tech pen on Paris board.

Been sick the last four days, so I'm staying away from pastel dust. And I guess this offering looks half-hearted. Not up to my best (not that that's so great--lol) but at least I'm trying. Maybe I'll give it another go when I'm feeling better. :p

Thanks so much, Danitangel. Been up in the wee hours every night for a few now. And this is NOT me. But I'm following doctor's orders, am on medication and suppose things will even out soon. I've now gotten acquainted with "Imus in the Morning" on CNBC from 3am to 6am. I really hate this business of being so out of kilter. But, I need to be less rigid--allow myself to sleep in the daytime when my body needs it, etc. So it throws me off my usual schedule.

I even did a postcard in pastels last night. I was very careful re: the dust. It didn't come out half bad--it's a Toucan. Even though I feel it's not up to my best, it makes me feel good to know I'm still doing my art.

Thanks for the kind remarks and the well wishes.

Cheers!

Thanks Carol. I am feeling better a little bit each day. I just finished 5 sketches for postcards and will begin to paint today.

Hey, I'd LOVE to go over to NZ! I hear it's just beautiful there. Who know, maybe some day........:D

I just applied fixative (again) to the toucan. It's looking a little better. I'll put another layer of color on and I'll send it to someone and then, yes, I'll post it, warts and all. :p

I believe you can either use the uploader, as normal, and paste the link in here. Or you could do a "Comment" from the Progress Image and it would appear in here.
