On Thursday, a glorious sunny day, we visited Abbey House Gardens in Malmesbury, Wiltshire - a five acre site with a backdrop of the Malmesbury Abbey Ruins. One of their claims to fame is that the husband and wife owners occasionally carry out their gardening in the nude, at which time visitors are also welcome to shed their clothing. These occasions only happen about 3 or 4 times a year when the public are admitted and visitors are given advance warning. Fortunately we did not choose one of those dates, but being rather warm the husband of the team was doing the weeding wearing very little to cover the imagination, hotly pursued through the flowerbeds by a rather excited elderly lady who was intent on getting as many sightings as possible of this rarity!
I digress - at this time of the year the tulip displays are reputed to be outstanding and we were certainly not disappointed. I did not manage many sketches, but we took loads of photos. However, down by the river which runs through the gardens was an amusing metal sculpture, about 5 ft. tall, of a fish with a rod, with a tiny man caught on the hook. I could not resist this pen and wash sketch.
