Here's my latest. It's acrylic on canvas board, 14 X 18. Critiques are welcome!

Hi Katie, I really like the way the sun is catching the mane and tail but the filly looks to be floating, perhaps a shadow to ground her and darken the far back leg

I agree, I like the light cought in the mane and tail. Plus I think a shadow of t he horse on the ground would make it pop. Jan

Jan and Doc have given all the advice you need to make this a winner!

Doc said what I was thinking. Also I would fuzz the background more, particularly towards the top of the canvas as in theory that is further away from the horse. Help the horse to pop forward more.

What a lovely sun-kissed painting. I like the suggestions offered to really make this an even nicer painting.

Great idea Dreamz! I'll try that. I knew it needed something! Thanks Jan, Anthony, Carol and Ann. Do you think I should darken the top part of the canvas too Carol? Th

No I don't think the top needs to be darkened . The perspective of having the grass further away will help to delineate the filly.

No Don't darken the the top background, if anything lighten it. As again, in thory, it will push it back creating distance.
This is lovely.Really like how you created sunlight bouncing from the horse.

I really like this one. The idea is so great. The only thing I would change....I would lengthen those ears......you can really get a lot of personality in a horses ears...
I would love to see more like this..

I love this one too Katie - in fact, I've saved this reference photo in my favorites. I'm happy to see someone did a lovely job painting this - you've captured the youthful spirit nicely and the suggestions above will only improve this already well done painting.

Thanks Audrey, Lawclerk and Celeste! I won't darken the background. The ears are the same length as the photo, and I'm afraid if I lengthen them they'll be too long for a filly's. Anybody else have any thoughts on the ears? I'm going to go for the changes tomorrow!

Here's the update--still couldn't get it to photograph as well as I'd like (the filly is less orange) but I'm very happy with it now. Thanks for the help!http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/13-Apr-2007/103800-artfullypaintedpetshorse2.jpg
