Nice, Maureen. I like the straight-on view. Good colors, good composition, good everything. Only two hours?

Great! (love the title of your post too!) Love how you painted it around the edges, that will look very neat on the wall! Those box canvas are fun.

I really like the light in your painting, almost can feel the warm sun!

Cocktail stick? Is there anything you can't paint with!? The thistle looks brilliant...and very prickly!

What a lovely little painting! It looks so real. Maureen, you amaze me with what you can achieve with a small canvas and unusual tools.

Hi Maureen, beautifully rendered. A weed in Australia but they are very eye catching as is your painting. You don't mess around do you, time wise.

Thanks everyone - I appreciate your comments , really I do!

Yes, the cocktail stick/toothpick was good for those spiky bits :D

It was quick and fun ...... the WDEs set 2 hours and then post - can continue if necessary after that, but this small, it just came together quickly.

I agree, very nicely painted.

If I showed it to a farmer around here he would probably pull out some industrial sized weed killer to use on me  I find many weeds actually quite beautiful, but living where I do, I would probably get run out of town for painting one

yes, they're a weed around here too. i'm surrounded by fields that are full of them and they pop up along the road. they are a very interesting and beautiful plant and the finches love their seeds. i'll have to see if i can get some pictures of some.

Weed or not - they're pretty at times :D

Bill, don't tell the farmer - we need some of them for the wildlife ...... and after all, it is the National Emblem of Scotland!

Lulu - you do say nice things! Thank you very much!

Thank you all, for taking the time to 'smell the roses - er, thistles' !!!!!!! :wink2:

Maureen,

you got a really nice structure on the thistle, with the cocktail sticks! I know this is not easy with acrylics, they tend to get very flat when they dry (at least that's my problem).

I did a similar thing once with a forest floor, I scratched all the twigs into the color with broken matches.

Beautiful the bright lighting. which photograph is closer to the truth? I enjoy the first (larger) one with the yellow tint - on the other one, there is almost too much white and too cool.

Love it, Maureen! The colors are quiet and peaceful while the thorns are NOT. Great piece... Gigi

Maureen You are so full of ideas and inspiration. There is nothing that gets in your way. Great stuff!

If I showed it to a farmer around here he would probably pull out some industrial sized weed killer to use on me  I find many weeds actually quite beautiful, but living where I do, I would probably get run out of town for painting one

Hi Bill. I agree. I have a little saying written out on a piece of wood. It says 'The difference between a flower and a weed is a judgement!' It's so true in many ways.

I want to know how many cocktails came with the cocktail stick, and how many it took before you started using that thing in your painting. :D  :D

Love the contrast. The dark background really makes it jump with light. I can feel the prickles of the thistle.

It's funny what scans can do - the thistle is probably best reproduced in the bigger version - the square - truer colour there, but the background shows more of the viridian in the smaller photo I think.

Thanks everyone for your observations

Jamie - fancy suggesting I needed all those cocktails to find a stick that worked ;) ;) ........ Eeeeee lassie! ... just the odd glass of wine perhaps?

Elaine - I know this is tiny, but I kept thinking about you/your work as I was painting it! ..... has to be the light :D

I have another 3 of these small canvases - better find some more weeds to go with them
