View Full Version : Hideous Iris

This is an older painting and I hate the background. Does anyone know if I can fix it? I do the background first so am not sure if I can go back and redo it now. I was thinking of just using black gesso. Of course, if it works out I will have to change its title lol!!

I don't think it is hideous at all and rather like the yellow-orange background. My suggestion would be to take out the cool blue colors behind the leaves or define that area more if it is another iris. Another thought is to also darken/deepen the shadows of the inside part of the top of the iris. It is definitely worth working on as you have some lovely things going on in your painting. Take this with a grain of salt though because composition is one of my weaknesses. :)

I agree-take out the blue-it's lovely!

I agree with Ann. Keep the orange and take out the blue.

I played about with this a bit for you on the PC. Hope you don't mind.

If you add some of the mid tone mauve here and there to define some of those pale petals it will add more form. I also added brighter highlights to the buds and the top of the left and right petals. On top of those two petals I also added the yellow furry bits (I have no clue what they are called  ) and brightened the furry bit in the centre petal. Just an idea to spark this up a bit. It is well worth working with as it looks so good already.

Hope this helps.

I agree with everyone else...lose the blue background. Also I would take out much of the background texture too and this will help to make the iris pop more.

NOT what I expected! I was thinking a monster in a ball gown or something:lol:

I like it and agree you can take this just a little further and have a really fine piece

Not hideous, at all! Looks like you have a winner in the making with the minor touch-ups suggested.

Thankyou everyone, I was sure this was a discard. Elaine, your demo was awesome, it really helps, just wish I knew how you did it! I will post another pic when I make the changes. You people are the best.

Wow Elaine sure "perked up" your painting.Sue.The votes are in and all agree. No need to change the background. It is just fine.Follow Elaine's idea and you've got a winner:)

Sue: Ann, Carol, Gail, Linda, Dreamz and Elaine said it all. You can fix 'most anything in acrylics. BTW, I like the background, except the blue, too.

I like the background too. Even the texture. The gold/yellows really set off the iris.

OK, for sure the background stays!! Will eliminate the blue and make a few touch-ups and will repost when done. Thanks everyone for taking the time to look at this and tell me what was wrong with it. Glad I didn't go ahead and change the background now.

Ok, here is the picture again now that I have taken out all the blue. Any suggestions? Should I deepen the background?

Wow Sue! What a fabulous transformation - it's beautiful - I wouldn't change a thing.

Beautifully impressionistic in style. I like it just the way it is!

WOW Sue it looks superb. That little bit of bright yellow in the centre and the brighter whites makes it pop now. Wonderful stuff.

This is lovely. I you don't mind, may I suggest going into the center that is in shadow and deepen the values there. That would give more form to the pale, lighter top petals.

This is lovely. I think the background is fine as it is.

Briege :)

Thanks Ann, I will see if I can deepen the values w/o messing it up. Thanks also Briege. I appreciate all the feedback.

It's a very beautiful painting now. The yellow center was a great improvement. The only thing I might recommand to change is the lower petals edges, which are a bit too jagged.
