That's a beauty, Mary_Ellens - wonderful light, great detail work, nice pose.

I've posted a couple of WIPs here on WetCanvas using multiple meticulous layers of paint and involving great patience, working from photographs. Here's something totally different: it's a portrait done from a live model in the weekly Saturday morning portrait class I attend, in 2 sessions a week apart of three hours each, including breaks. In the first session we did a grisaille underpainting in raw umber and white, and in the second session we overlaid that with glazed skin colors. A nice exercise in working quickly. Here goes:

Almost finshed, but that is always subject to change without notice.

I have asked some war veterans who belong to the local Legion to model for me. Here are the final drawings of the first sitter. Hopefully I can sneak away from my day job and add one or two more to the gallery this month . . .

I usually post to the colored pencil forum, but I mostly do portraits, and I thought I'd post here instead this time. Attached is a scan of a commissioned portrait I did of a friend's grandfather. I used colored pencils on black paper. Comments and critique welcome.

Well here's something along the lines of a drawing I'm doing ...it's a conte drawing on pastel paper. The shadow you see is that cast by the scanner.
Would someone be willing to share how to resize an image without it going so small? Larubia.....- ....anyone??? Thanks

I use photodraw thats`as much as I know. Like your drawing too! This one is pastel and conte on vellum.

This is a portrait of a friend I am working on who lost her battle with cancer. I have concerns about the painting but not sure how to fix them. If any one has advice, I would welcome it.

Great stuff this month. I love looking through this thread.

This is a model from our weekly group. she is in her early eighties. Two sessions two hours each and a few more hours at home. I don't know if I want to finish it or not or leave it kind of soft. I would probably overwork it and I am getting a bit tired of it too. I usually need to finish a project within a week or I lose interest. I think i have a bit of attention deficit when it comes to painting.

I like the face but am not crazy about the clothing. I did work hard to downsize the wrinkles as she is going to buy one of the paintings- we just don't know whose yet.

Larubia, I have done a little pastel work and agree with you that pastels are a bit tough, but I think your work is very good. On the one you gave up on, other than perhaps a bit redish in the face, I think is very nice. I sort of agree with the other person that it looks finished.

I'm about ten steps behind you on the computer tech stuff. Be that as it may, I see you have another lovely self portrait. Well one good turn as they say. Here's an update on a little self-portrait I've been working on. The grisaille has been done this far today. I've included some close ups to give an idea of how loose this is nearer to the eye. It's 8x10 inches.

Boy, there's some amazing work in this thread. Wow.

I actually finished this one in February, but I haven't posted here in a while and I haven't attempted anything else this ambitious since then, so let's just pretend it's recent. :)

My niece, aged two, last summer. Graphite on bristol, 8x10 or so. C&C welcome.

Thanks Larubia! You made my day. I know you love self portraits;)...you do have some stunning ones to your credit. I really do like them.
I find them to be challenging, especially from life.
It is an honourable tradition...hey when you're in Rembrandt's company - that isn't too shabby! Plus the model fees are next to nothing.:D
Funny though someone stopped by yesterday while I was painting and commented on the fact that I was doing a self-portrait...not mean-spirited. Still, judging from the tone, I got the distinct impression it was thought to be an endeavor of vanity on my part.
I could only respond that when one is setting out to paint a pumpkin...pretty much any will do..Cheers Larubia.

Sorry Indy, I wasn't ignoring your question...I just plain missed it. How's that for powers of observation. Anyway, no I resize my images in photoshop cs. I think my difficulty is that I see people's images large - like Laruia's - in the text field rather than a 'click-on-to-enlarge attachment' such as mine. That's really what I am wondering about. I own a Mac..could this have somethinng to do with it...try to remember I'm like those cave-dudes on the geico commercialswhen it comes to tech stuff, that's one reason why I have no interest in computer art.:)

Definitely the Blue Version...Actually I like the red coloured robe more than the blue but the modelling and expression are softer and less harsh than in the Red Version. The blue lady is someone I would love to talk with and get to know whereas, her red side makes me want to avoid her ire.

Hi All,
I haven't posted in this forum before, but I am amazed by all the wonderful artists here. I've been trying my hand at portraits these days. They are such a challenge and I have so far to go! But I love it. This is in Prismacolor pencils, 8X10. I posted it in the colored pencil forum as well. It's my daughter and her faithful dog Sam. Thanks for looking!
