View Full Version : Oils, alkyds, gouache....

Just wondering how these compare as far as "sameness" of colors and mixing -
In other words, if I have an oil mixing guide, will alkyds of the same name mix the same? (I know that colors can vary between manufacturers)....
And how about gouache?
I have found that my oil mixing chart only goes so far with acrylics ;)

Oils and alkyds are essentially identical from what I have seen. I have only compared Griffin but they look the same as W&N oils where the same pigments are used.
Many gouaches are opaque because of added opacifiers so they look like white was added, so neither oil nor watercolour mixing guides can be used directly (although the underlying principles are similar).
What kind of problems have you had with translating oil mixes to acrylics? Most oil mixes I have looked at and tried work in acrylics pretty directly. Pigments 'wet' differently with the two different vehicles so any differences should lie only in value (darker for oils) but the hue remains the same so mixes should behave similarly (there will be some slight differences for light-valued colours where the colour of the vehicle can be seen).
