View Full Version : Cactuses WIP (or is it cactai?)

Well, after the last western landscape debacle (she's on hold until the spirit moves me) I decided to clear my mind with a nice quick sketch of some saguaros. While I'm surpisingly happy with the purple and grey clouds, I'm not sure where to go with the saguaros--they're dark and I want them to be so but not a complete silhouette just someplace somewhere inbetween. Will send revised once I get near my trusty wacom again. As always, comments welcome and thanks in advance.

Fur such a sunny day, maybe some highlight along the side of the saguaros will help and will add contrast while keeping them as silhouettes.

Exactly! I knew something was amiss but why I had not even begun to think about highlights on them is beyond me. But that definitely is part of the problem and now I can see it coming together. Thanks!...now only if I were near my tablet...:(

Great beginning and I think the highlights is all that would be needed.

I don't think anyone can go wrong with purple and green!

This is looking great... nice sky, and I agree with everyone on those highlights.

Looks great and I was going to say hi lites LOL but won't as everyone else has said that :D

Ok, added some highlights, took out a cactus and things seem to be going well. With one cactus removed, however, I'm half tempted to just take out all of them now and leave a small horizon with a big cloudy sky. actually, that may be next...

BINGO this is it! In my eyes it is finished!

Now they look more alive! But where is the light coming from?

 Yes indeed, the light made them pop out nicely.. well done.

Thanks everybody!

jhercilia: The light is theoretically coming from straight above and semi-in front. I'm trying to keep them in silhouette while defining shape and making them stand out, I think I like it, but I can't help but get a "grr. argh" feeling too and wonder if that's what I want.

Great! That's what I thought about where the light was coming from. I just wanted to confirm that. Great job.
