For the past few years I 've been using DAWN dish detergent to clean my oil brushes after each use, and I have found that it hasn't destroyed them. There isn't any smelly fumes as with turps or other paint cleaners and the brushes usually clean up nicely except for the staining paints but they maintain there shape and softness after. I guess if its good enough for cleaning waterfowl after an oil spill why not your brushes.

If they've lasted for a few years with this cleaning regime, then they're doing well. I would normally have expected my brushes to have worn out with use by now.

I meant to say that the way you're cleaning them sounds ok...

I first rinse out the solids in mineral spirits, then do like you, use Dawn. over the last few years, I've begun using Ugly Dog Soap as my second wash on hog bristle brushes. It gets out even more pigment and solvent and conditions the brushes too.
