Please tell me what you think. Did this a couple years ago, just found the original the other day, thought it would be fun to show. THis is done with Gouache and colored pencil for detail.

Beautiful! I love the bright blue colors. I also really like the liquid feel to the eye, and how you used lost edges.

I've used colored pencil over gouache before, but mostly just for textural effect. Could you give an example of how you used it to create detail? I'd love to try out that method... :D

Thank you all for your comments. As far as how to use colored pencil for detail, it was easier and more effective to highlight or add a shadow around the feather areas on the face. I also used it for the very slight value changes and was able to blend between value changes with the pencil for a softer feather like look. The piece is about 10"x12".

Thank you for the tip! I am thinking about doing a bird next... so I may try the colored pencils on it. I think they're the more waxy kind though... I'll see what I get. Thanks again!

Hehe, looks like a parrot that bit me at the pet store just a couple hours earlier :D it was my fault tho. Very adorable!

Beautiful parrot painting! I stumbled upon this thread a bit late, but I'm a great fan of parrots so the title caught my eye. I love the intense colors you used in this painting as well as your technique. I also like to use colored pencils for detailing on some of my water media paintings. I've been doing mostly acrylic or oil paintings in recent years, but this thread has inspired me to try gouache again.

Very nice!
