Tried to slip these into February...but too late!
Portraits of my friend's son and daughter. They are both quite "pierced" and usually have much more of a street look to them. The only image I had of Amanda was one in which she looked quite scrubbed up - no dreads, no piercings in, so I felt obliged to portray Adam in the same way. Strange to see them so out of character!

Very nice, and I enjoyed that they aren't pierced :) I know it's in vogue and my son has holes in his ears big enough to drive a mac thru...i find myself wondering if those tatts will expand at middle age when the body parts do

Laurie, your two Portraits are excellent. I love your palette in both, and the girl's hair is beautifully done, as are their features -- eyes etc. And they are both very good looking kids, so I'm glad you left the piercings etc. out. Fantastic work, and thanks for getting the Gallery off to such a great start for March.
Val.
Thank you Lee and Val. I had mixed feelings about these two being stripped of what they wear as their identity. But I'm glad I went that way.

Nice portraits, Laurie! Lots of personality in both kids! You didn't mention what medium you used....
I'm posting up my WIP shots of the model I'm currently working on in my weekly portraiture workshop. Another profile -- I get there late, and find room on the side! :D
I'm using a hard charcoal pencil on grey Stonehenge paper (a half-sheet).
Showing WIP of two weeks' progress... though I am not pleased with the likeness to the model. Still one more week to go.
Here is week 1 -- a general shot and a detail:

I think the photo was from a WC weekend event a while back. Not quite sure about the scale/location of the right eye, and there were some pink-purple-blue highlights that didn't pop like I wanted. I was test-driving a Dynasty Interlock synthetic brush that has a nice taper. Hope it doesn't go the way of so many soft brushes and start doing the splay thing. Recommendations?

Actually, I worked on it some last night -- working on the darks, etc. of the blouse, which is a brown satin - and rather challenging. I might be able to post something before Wednesday, or will just post a few WIP shots, and what I get done on Wednesday from life, in one post. I hope to get the whole portrait finished this month.
It's a bit complicated for me to download digital photos, as this old computer isn't compatible with the camera. I have to get my husband to download it to his laptop, and then put it on a CD so I can transfer it to this computer.

Hiya guys,
Here is a self portrait I painted in 1984. It's an acrylic painting on a panel. My wife nevr liked it because she thought it made me look mean and I am anything but that. Usually, I am the clown of the party - at least she thinks so.
Laurie, your portraits are terrific. They are so expressive and you can see that they are related. It looks like they were caught going out the door and only paused long enough to take a shot of them. You could almost title them, "No time to say hello or goodby, I'm late, I'm late for a very important date."
Lauren, most of the times those profiles are the most difficult poses to pull off. I think you are doing a very nice portrait here.
Steve, all I can say about your portrait is, "I wish I had painted that." Great job my friend, lots of expression - determination. I love the colors.
Hiya Ralph. Great composition. This is a great pose and the lighting on that open page pulls your eye over to the paper making you wonder, what the hell; this guy is reading. Frame it and hang it.

Hello to every one, This is the first time I've posted on this thread. I have posted a fair bit on the classical painting thread. This sequence is from a piece I have been working on for some time now. I have posted earlier versions of it on the other thread. It is a portrait I am doing in the classical layered method. You can still see an umber underlayer showing beneath the grisaille. I've show some detail shots also...gives a notion of the brushwork. It is a bit looser than it might appear from a distance. By the way, there's some nice stuff on this thread.

Beautiful style, Keron. Looks as if we paint the same stuff but using totally different methods. I love the detail in your painting but I just don't want to spend more than 4-5 hours on any one painting. I think I have attention deficit when it comes to painting. I love it but I need constant stimulation and chaneg to hold my interest. They're selling pretty well, especially the children. Nora

Most of what I do is not of this manner...i.e. layered. While they are generally more direct, some rapid by comparison...I can usually hold my attention for longer than 4-5 hours - meaning I'll tackle most things over a period of sessions but certainly not to the degree of this piece posted here.

More nice work on here!!
Hal -- lovely portrait! I went to your website, and see you've done a few more recent SP's -- really nice stuff! Very impressive!
Nora -- Lovely paintings  -- I esp. liked the second -- of the little girl - and the third, of the man. Did you take the reference photos yourself? If so, at a local PowWow? Lovely loose style!
Keron -- This is working up very nicely. Is grisaille usually done so detailed? I have a lot to learn about traditional Old Masters' methods. This gentleman's outfit is very impressive. Looking forward to your progress on this painting. :D
Meanwhile, I have done more work on my charcoal portrait of Eszter, who has been the model at our weekly Wednesday morning portrait workshop for the past 3 weeks. This morning was her last session. I can continue and finish from the reference photos I took. It's been nice using life, photos, life, photos.... to check and see details. I try to do my best from life, but find the photos can help to correct any proportion problems between sessions. Also good for making sure I am getting the same pose from the same angle each time, and correcting the model's position after breaks. :D
Here are 2 WIP shots:
The first is from yesterday, working on the blouse and violin from the photos. I figured a way to do the satin blouse. I'm mainly working with a hard charcoal pencil, but also with a pressed vine charcoal stick, and using a tortillion to smudge when needed.

Lauren on the satin 'problem'. When I look at your drawing, I'm seeing more of a velvet effect. May I make a suggestion? There's a site called Art Renewal Center International (ARC International). On one of its toolbars is a section called 'museum'. Click on it go to select artist by name. Check out Ingres for some really great examples of painted and drawn fabrics - one he mastered extremely well is satin. This woul give you some hints about where to go.
Other than this your drawing seems to be shaping up quite nicely. Where in Ontario are you. Hi from the Montreal area!

Hey Hal, That's the same problem that I have with SPs. My wife never likes them due to the mean expression! I think that it's just because we're concentrating so hard that we end up looking like that...

Hi, Keron! I see what you mean. It's hard with the dark satin, and I don't want the fabric to stand out so much that it takes away from the portrait -- kind of a balance one has to reach.
I'm aware of ARC, and will check out that part of the site. Regarding Ingres -- the latest issue of American Artist Drawing magazine has a nice article on Ingres' drawings.

Wow Hal, that portrait is amazingly done! Nice work. I envy how well you did that shadowed side of the face. I have to really work at doing that better since that seems to be the type of portrait I prefer to do.
Some beautiful brush work Nora, I especially like the face on the 3rd portrait and the child above!
Beautiful Native people portraits from Keron too!!!!
Lauren, I think the reason your satin looks a bit velvety is the nap which is being created by the textural rendering style. Satin is created a bit better via blending smoother or (and I hate this technique physically but....) smudging and removing with a soft eraser for the lights and highlights. Nice work!!! I love your drawing style very much, as I have mentioned previosuly.
Great to see everyone's stuff together on these threads.
I am presently Not doing personal pieces :-( But hope to get back to one in about 2 weeks. I have some illustrations for a first aid manual of a certified instructor and I have a commission to finish up this week that has been haning on for months. Hope to get to my drawing group this weekend too as I have been unable to go for various reasons for almost a month.

Hi everyone!
This is my first time in the portraiture forum, so I hope I'm posting in the right place. This is my second portrait, and I'm having trouble with it. It's nowhere close to done - I just finished blocking everything in. But the eyes are really bugging me.
It's a self portrait, done with a mirror, so it's hard to make the eyes look away. Should I scrap that and make them look directly at the viewer? They're really bugging out too. Are they too big? How can I make them less "creepy?"

Hi Meg!
I like your style very much, you have quite a talent for assembling colors in an exciting combination in the face.
Regarding the eyes, how about just putting small highlight spots slightly up and to the left of the center of each eye - that immediately adds sparkle? Another thing would be to darken slightly the top of the whites of both eyes, this adds roundness and makes them seem less open/staring.

Here's a portrait I finished in 2005... it was done without a monochrome underlayer, i.e. straight on the white canvas. Today I always start with an underlayer, typically a neutral brown-grey. But in this case I actually think the white underlayer makes the face more luminescent. Also, at the time I used W&N Winton colors, which are matter than the W&N Artists colors I use today.

This is the style of painting I would like to be able to do all the time. Unfortunately I usually mess them up by overworking because I don't know when to stop. I like the look of a little thin underpainting showing through and the thicker, lighter opaque paint on top that still has brushwork showing.

Villi, thank you for replying! I will certainly add highlights to the eyes - I was planning on it but hadn't done it yet because I wanted to get the irises the right shape. I will go ahead and add them and see how it changes the eyes. Thanks very much for the tip about adding shadow - I added shadow only to the bottom, so now I will add it to the top. Thanks for helping me get re-motivated! I was stuck.
The portrait you posted is stunning. I like the "chunky" background.
Nora, it is amazing what you've done in such a short time! I like the style you use and also the way the underpainting shows through, especially visible in her chest area - very neat effect.

Hiya Tex,
Often, when I look back at my career, I am flabborghasted at the volume of work that I did. But when you are working day by day, you don't think like that. I guess it's like the old saying about the longest trip begins with the first step. BTW, all my brothers are either going bald or bald. Maybe there is something in the acrylic paints that keeps my hair growing. hahahah
Thank you Keron.
Thank you Lauren, but if you are referring to my self portraits, I haven't really done that many. I painted myself in 1984, 2004 and 2007. OOOOOps, I forgot that one I did when I was only 24 or 25 yrs. old in 1966.
I think you're right NW. That has to be it because I am anything but an unhappy or mean person.
Hiya Jocelyn, I was checking out your paintings on your website and I don't think you have to change one thing in your style of painting, your work is terrific.
Hiya Meg, I hope your uncle is a cool guy. You look exactly like my buddy's daughter - Pam. She is a cutie pie and has a great fun loving spirit.
There is a lot of wonderful paintings posted here that I will try to comment on a little later. Right now, I have to get a 4 page brochure, a gorilla's painting, and a finished pencil for a new book cover finished this weekend.

Meg, she looks pretty good, and the eyes are beautiful. The lower lip is what catches the attention, it's quite exaggerated, especially by the light curve to its lower left and right sides. I don't know your subject but it looks like the painting would benefit from de-emphasizing the lower lip.

Villi - thanks so much for your reply. Someone who knows me looked at it and said I look "pouty," so you two must have a point. ;) I do have a large lower lip and I noticed those light patches you mentioned for the first time when I sat down to paint myself. Looks like I over-exaggerated them.
I mirrored this one a lot but it's hard to be objective when painting yourself! I'm learning that some things in a portrait should be emphasized and some de-emphasized.
Thanks again!

I hope you don't mind but I made a few adjustments on your portrait that might be of some help to you. Please let me know if this bothers you and I won't do it again.

So much beautiful work here! March seems to be a very productive month for everyone. Thank you Lauren, Lauren and Valchina for you comments. Hal, I look your interpretation...these kids are always on the move - hopping trains and living wherever they land. There mom sees them for a bit mid winter, when it is too cold to live outside and they camp out at her place to stay warm!
Steve, very nice work. The eye seems quite perfect to me. Love your pallette and the warm highlights on his face.
Ralph, your adaptation to painting is truly impressive. A bit daunting!
Hal, I see more humour here than "mean". Nice work. 1984? You have been very talented for a long time!

Hal,
Thanks so much!! It helps a ton to see what other people would do. Looks like you made the lip smaller, the chin area lighter, and the nose and chin shadows smaller and less dark. It really is a great improvement, but if you had asked me what was wrong, I wouldn't have been able to point those things out. Thanks for the fresh eyes! Since this is oils, I'll go back and work on it some more. (I can do that with oils, right?)
I might have to smile and take a photo this time to reference the mouth - it's hard to look pleasant in the mirror for several hours at a time.

Sean -- Welcome to WetCanvas, and especially to the Portrait Gallery. Your Portraits are absolutely awesome. Each and every one has its own special attributes. Thankyou so much for posting them, and I can't wait to see more.
Jerome -- Hi  Great to see you back in the Gallery, and as always your Portrait is better than a photo. Totally awesome work on this young lady Jerome. I love the way you've got the "frizz" depicted in her hair, and as always, the eyes are stunning. It's always a privilege to have one of your Portraits in our Gallery.

Hey, here is a bass player and bass in the background from an orchestra....
i posted it in the drawing and sketches section, and i was told it could be a portrait...
Here it is! check it out!! sorry for the darkness and the glare, it has plastic over it, to prevent smudges, etc. ty for comments in advanced. its also dark from my camera sucking... its 18x24 on grey chalk paper (i forget the name)

Well, I used Hal's excellent advice and a photo of me smiling and gave my self portrait another go. Please let me know if it's an improvement, and if there's more I can do to improve.

mang - I love the warmth of your portrait.
SeanAnetsberger - I love Billy joel, and you've done a fabulous job on him! I also play the cello, so I really like your bass portrait.
Spanner - Beautiful portrait! You can already see the smile in her eyes.

Yes, a definite improvement, Meg - and it's a really fine self-portrait (with the usual serious expression of self-portraits ;-) Again, I like your bold use of colors and the carefully placed highlights.

Hi, all!
Lots of great portraiture work happening on here! Bravo to you all!
I'm getting back here a little later than I'd planned. However I did manage to spend a few hours on my Eszter with violin charcoal pencil portrait. I finished the figure and the fiddle, though I might add some white highlights later. Also plan on doing the arm of the wicker chair she is sitting in.
So -- here it is at this point:

Going out of town (without computer access) tomorrow until Thursday. I'll check back in then to see what new art and chat has been posted here. Have a great week! :D
Cheers, Lauren

A few more I just completed. The first is a pastel from Saturday morning at our portrait group. The next three are oils--the woman w/pink background was a commission piece that I spent a couple weeks on -it is his grandmother from a small b&w photo of poor quality. The other two are no. 4 and 5 in my series of ten Native American Indian children.

Villi - thanks for the comment! It's really hard to be objective when staring at your own face. :)
Lauren - I really like your portrait. Nice cloth folds.
Nora - I like the looseness of your pastel and the colors in the last oil. The blue earrings go really well with the orange background.

Sean -- Well done with your Cello Player. It's a bit dark to see a lot of detail, but the hand is certainly extremely well done.
Larubia -- I take it these are self portraits, and they are beautifully done. You are so hard on yourself with your work, as they are stunningly done. I love the both of them, and especially the poses.
Meg -- Wow, you have a wonderful Self Portrait there. I love the way you have finished it off, and the palette is great. Give yourself a big pat on the back.
Lauren -- Just love what you are doing with this Portrait. Love the way you have rendered the material in the dress too. Looking forward to seeing it finished with the chair.
Nora -- Wonderful Portraits -- they are all great, and I especially love your Native girl paintings. The palette in the last one is sensational.

Annemarie -- I am loving what you are doing. You are so very, very tough on yourself. I'm sorry, but I can't delete the images you asked about, as only the Mods can do that. I'm sure everyone is going to love looking at all three as much as I have. Thanks so much for posting them.
