This is a demo of Sam's Paperboy - the link to the intact, original, thread is here. (http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=358596)

Here is my rendition of the paperboy done in airbrush It took about 2 hours and is 5-inches by 7-inches acrylic on bristol. I used Golden Airbrush transparents to paint this. I post it as a How I Did It rather than a WIP it was just easier this way for me.

Here are the steps:

Step one--Spray a blue base to establish shadows

Step two--erase out the highlights

Step Three--come back over the blue with a brown and blue mixture more brown then blue to give it a deeper look.

Step Four--erase out the highlights again trying to use a lighter touch in areas to only erase the brown/blu mixture to allow the blue undercolor to show through

Step Five--come back and refine any areas that are not clear and add the drop shadow add a little white here and there to establish some brights. All told 2 hours maybe 2.5 did not do it in one sitting.

Hi All thanks for the somments. Yes you can erase acrylics if you keep the layers light enough not thick. Using the airbrush allows you to keep them very thin. Here is another piece I recently did using this technique you can really build depth with it if you want. http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=351713 Thanks again.

It helps to use an electric eraser but you can erase at any stage. I use different erasers to get different effects. A hard eraser like a pen eraser works great to get back to white whereas a softer eraser like a pencil eraser erases only lightly and just softens the effect. I use this effect sometime to help blend transitions. You can use eraser shields to get hard edges but i just cut my eraser to a sharp edge to get different effects. It is very similar to wiping out with oil paint. Also if you use a staining paint it will erase but leave a stain so it give a nice effect as well. Just experiment and see what you all can come up with. Again this is for washes of acrylic not thick passes.
