Class 9, 10 & 11 Review
In the past three classes, we have been learning how to draw clouds, rocks and water. In this review we are going to give you an opportunity to do a few more exercises to hone in your skills.
Here are some review tips:
1. Convert the image to greyscale. This will help you 'see' the range of grey values better. (If you need assistance in converting images to greyscale - please ask!!)
2. Try adding a sky or clouds to the image for creativity. Add a horizon line where needed. Be sure to define the light source on the clouds so it is the same as the reference photo.
3. Work on differentiating "textures" that will define sky, water or rocks.
4. Express yourself. Use your own artistic style or experiment with your own textures to achieve the level of realism you want to express.
The techniques that have been explained in these classes were provided to get you started. Landscapes can easily intimidate because of the complexity of the subject matter. BUT once you get over the hurdle of how to "dissect" a landscape - the possibilities and subject matter become endless!
5. Most importantly - have fun!!!
Judi (our fantastic moderator  ) has been so kind to choose a variety of photo references from the WC image library to select from. I will be available to answer questions or offer suggestions!!

Stay tuned for the next drawing lesson starting March 19th - Class 13 Drawing "Trees"!!!

This will be really fun!
And such a wonderful array of choices!  :D
We so appreciate your time you spend here creating these great Classes!
I am really looking looking forward to doing this one as well! It will be such fun to see how far we have come in this short amount of time-and making them all work together.
Thanks again! Come on gang! As soon as you feel comfortable with the lessons in Class 9, 10 and 11-Jump in!

02-22-2007, 01:45 AM
HI how do you do grayscale ? thankyou . jasmine
02-22-2007, 07:46 AM
Do you have a photo editing software? Usually there is a feature that allows you to change your photo from color to greyscale.
Most printers also let you print in black & white.
Let me know which image you would like to use and I'd be happy to convert it for you and post it.

Hello class I’ve picked my subject for the review, have started working it and should be posting progress in a couple of days. J
02-26-2007, 03:41 PM
great idea to play with water/rocks/clouds for a few weeks! Judi those are all exceptional pictures!
I was already working on the next one, maybe it belongs more in the water class, as we had to pick a favorite picture that we never thought we'd have the courage to do... here is mine.
At first sight, do you go "what the...?" or can you tell it is an attempt at water, or foam, rather.
I kept swinging between the " I want to do this as realistically as I can" attitude and the "is this even a worhwhile exercise, am I missing the boat on the "interpreting" part?"
Also cannot decide whether to continue and put another round into this, or should I have quit 10 hours ago?
looking forward to seeing all the landscapes everyone comes up with...

Glad you are working on this! Good job so far! Very challenging ref you chose to! Kudos to ya!
Me too-but nothing much to show yet:o .
I think you are doing a great job! The thing I think is missing is more direction of the water flow that indicats the left to right direction and some more values/transitions.
Look at these:

03-01-2007, 07:43 PM
Hey Susan-That is looking WONDERFUL!!!!!  How large is this?
03-01-2007, 08:58 PM
You have a nice splash going there! I like the overall composition and placement of your rocks. You have strong values and you aren't afraid of your darks...which is good.
How can you do better? I would concentrate on your pencil strokes. While you have the values nice and dark - I can see the direction of your pencil strokes. Try using shorter, more random strokes, or perhaps small circular strokes when drawing the rocks. This creates a texture and creates more 3-dimensionality.

Beautiful work! I love the waves. I can just feel them as they move towards to the shore. NICE JOB!!

For anyone who is interested, I have started a thread in the main D/S of a Barn Commission that I am currently working on. I figured I should share a WIP practicing what I've been preaching....

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/03-Mar-2007/65063-review_water_3.jpg i worked on the sky and dark high lights in water today...needs something ..but dont know what:confused: :p this is the crop that ive decided to use for it..tyree
03-04-2007, 05:43 PM
Susan-your darks are really paying off here! Such a lovely moonlit night is what I see.
Well work has kept me at bay here-then DH has been really ill-though today he seems somewhat better. He ate 3 cookies!
I am back to it this afternoon some and made this drawing half the size as usually so perhaps that will help me catch up some. This is barely 20% done.:(
03-05-2007, 02:11 PM
jasmine, great start, and you got great advice from Diane,
tyree, that is amazing, you've got this water class mastered! I will watch how you finish this... I think it will help give a new direction to the one I am doing.
Judi, this 20% is great already, the 100 percent will be outstanding! Hope hubby is better,...
here is a follow up of the one I started... have been diddling with it, changed some of the waterflow (thank you, Judi, for that advice)... tones I am stuck with, the reference is pure whitewater, of course without darks, there are no whites, is what I am trying to convince myself.
I think I am ready to move on to another one, but I do feel that it could be taken to a higher level... if I knew how.
03-05-2007, 07:59 PM
There is definitely some beautiful work here!! Kudos to all!!
I am posting a piece I have been working on since Rocks. I selected a beautiful photo posted by atapaz fin the RIL or my rock ref. Then I decided since I was falling behind I could catch up by posting it in the water lesson.
Well here it is in the Review which should let me catch up on 102 and jump over to pastels even if I am a bit tardy.
This is on 9x12 Bristol using .5mm 2B and HB as well as 2mm leads in 2B, HB, H, 2H and 4H. Total time is well over 100 hours.
Seriously I want to offer many thanks to Diane and Mike Sibley for sharing their techniques in graphite and to JayD, Judi, Mary, Sultry and all the subbies for helping me learn patience .....as well as how to draw.

03-07-2007, 11:57 PM
Not much to look at, slow going on this one. size 8x10
03-08-2007, 08:25 AM
I used one of the reference images on the list, but added clouds in the sky. I think the sky should be lighter, but then the clouds would not show. Is the water too light for the sky? This is 8.5" x 6x".
03-08-2007, 01:15 PM

I've just started on the Rocks Clouds and Water classes so will be awhile befor I get here. Just dropped in to see how every one is doing.
Joe; That water of yours is soooooo realistic that I thought I could reach out with a glass and get some and your rocks WOOOOOW!!!
Connie; I think that all your tones are great for a full moon light picture even the wonderful water.
Scrappie: words just do not seem adequate for your picture just WONDERFUL
