View Full Version : Winter in the Netherlands in Gouache

This was done from one of the WDE photo references for this weekend.

5x7, gouache on Fabriano Artistico:

It's already double matted and ready to go into a standard 8x10 frame....

There's a photo of my color palette on my blog, as well as a larger version of the painting. I used just three colors and white. LOVED painting this. Thanks so much, Connie, for the reference image.

I like how you took advantage of the limited palette and how you used the gouache. For me, some of the "streaky" tendencies of gouache are frustrating, but I think you used that here to great effect!

I especially like the shadow area in the foreground. I've tried landscapes in every other medium I've ever experimented with, and have given up every time. I can never get a handle on the expanse of space like you have here. And all this in a 5x7!

Meg, you really do need to build up the paint, and I agree that it's hard to get rid of The Streakies! For skies they can work to your advantage though!

Ralph, with all the beautiful work you do, it's hard for me to believe that you can't get a grip on landscapes. They are so much easier for me than any other subject! But maybe that's because I'm mainly a landscape painter! I find portraiture the most difficult by far.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Jamie. Right now I'm working on small head and face studies, learning to use the brush on smaller subjects. The aim is to try something other than portraits... maybe some street or interior scenes. We'll see how it goes.

for me, it is amazingly difficult to work small. Guess that comes from my billboard background! Anyway, this is a delightful piece.

Thanks so much, Wendy. I totally admire billboard painters. I'm afraid of heights!

Thank you so much, Kleurpotlood! That's a very high compliment indeed, coming from a real Dutchman! (or Dutchwoman???) :)
