Okay here's my next attempt with pastels and the other half of that same reference photo (like to get value for my refs LOL). It's another monochrome type piece so same paper and pastels as last time, fabriano tiziano paper and derwent and FC pastel pencils and it's 8x10. I THINK I'm getting there!

very sweet. I particularly like the way you rendered the part in the fur on the hindquarter.

The cool brights remind me of desert summer mornings before the sun starts to bake everything.

Was there ever any doubt? :-)
So do you like pastel then?

You nailed it! This is a vast improvement on your first piece. The background could have been left but the cub itself is wonderful! Nicely done

Thanks everyone :D I'm definitely feeling a lot more confident with them now. I think it's the lack of control when I'm used to being so tightly wound with cp's that I find hard to get used to! :D I actually really do like them though and I'll be doing lots more for sure. :D

It looks to me that you have big, loose pastel strokes scribbled down but they all seem to be scribbled down in the right place. That must be the trick. A bit like my piano playing, I can play all the notes, but I just seem to play them in the wrong order..... :wink2:

This is a really fine piece. I can't wait for you to buy some more pastels since your CP work in colour is so good.

Thanks Patrick :d I'm going to go pastel shopping tomorrow woohoo :D I'm quite nervous about going full colour, it's kind of like the difference between graphite and coloured pencil all over again! :D Hehe you're right, it is a bunch of scribbles hehe :D

Great job Wendy! With your skill you will be a master of pastels in no time (as if you aren't already!) I look forward to seeing more pastels from you, and think you'll really enjoy both the looseness and the detail you can get with them. :)
