BUT you are supposed to do one of the three referances provided.
The idea is to see how different people handle the same images.
SO go and try another!!:D :D

First, welcome Dianne to WC and to the projects!! Looking forward to getting to know you and seeing all your work! Boy, this will be a change for you from murals! Well, I would assume that smaller scale would be easier to handle then something that you are used to but, it could prove challenging!! I like what you have done so far with blocking her in! Looking forward to the progression!!:)

Thank you for the welcome,Caron.
I love your work btw.
I'm a nursing a really bad cold right now, trying to keep myself from going out and taking care of business. This is a great way to keep me home. I'll be posting more in a little while.
Thanks so much for the encouragement.

Here's my latest. Looks like I'm the only spending the day on the computer...? THat's because I have a miserable cold and I'm making myself stay in for the day...week actually.
Added some brighter red, lighter lights and bluer blues for shadow. Still working on it.

This is a wonderful exercise. Will be doing more!

I also start back to work tomorow:p so I will not be near the computer for the whole weekend.

Thank you orchid for steping outside your comfort zone to give this a try! Horses are not a easy subject to depict.
I think you got a really good start here. But I know you can do better if you try again ( assuming your willing) I've seen how nice your drawings are and I know you can do it.
If your willing try this as an excersize.
Print out the photo and do a direct trace of it on to some ceep drawing paper. Then do your shading. Your doing this to sort of train your hand and eye to see the shapes of the horse better. Then if you feel any better about it. Try it free hand again. I think you will find that the second one will be better. If you don't want to do the same one again try just the head shot. Start with a simple line drawing and post it here I will take it into photoshop and help you with the corrections before you start shading
LMK if you have any questions.

First of all welcome to wet canvas Dianne!! If you are already doing a project you must be addicted like the rest of us :D

First off let me say you are amazing to get this done so quick! What media did you use? I would guess oils?
I love the colours you have used. You got the sun glinting off their hides just right.
The only thing I can say in forum of criticism is that the structure of the standing horse is off. You have him heading down hill too much. The withers (base of the neck for those who don't know) and his hindquarters should be at the same height. Head should be a bit higher up. But that said if someone does not see the reference photo and knows a bit about horses they would assume that the horse is a Juvenal and needs to grow a bit. Because horses as they grow do have a tendency to be either bum high or withers high. But they do even out by the time they are 3-5 years.

Hope to see you try the other photos.
Hope your feeling better soon too

Very nice drawing. Do check out the left hind leg. You have it looking like its bending the wrong way because the joint is so low to the ground and it looks like the left hip is much too low...it makes the whole leg appear as though its bending forward like a knee. That's the only thing I can see that's wrong. Other than that you have really nice muscular tone and movement in this drawing. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Thanks, Orchidlover. Yep, looks like we're in the same boat, except you know where to go next. LOL

Wing you are doing great!.
Only one tiny thing I would change, and it's in the photo too.
There is a dark spot on his outstreched right front leg, right were the left leg crosses behind it. It's visually distracting. Almost looks like you made a mistake and corrected it. No fault of yours like I said it's in the photo too. But I think for the drawing you should lighten it up. Another one of those "when in doubt leave it out" moments.
I look froward to seeing the final.

I think you did a great job Geoff. The only comments I can make is structurally his head is too short.....but that does make him look like a racing Quater Horse. So it still works in my book:D Other then that I'd like to see a bit more shading. In pencil work I like to see every tone from black to white and every grey in between.

Well done Geoff!!

your story about running out of paper reminded me of a drawing i did when i was young. I drew a foal, and couldn't get the back end right, i tried and tried and finally, discouraged, drew a barn wall & door over top as if the foal was thinking about coming out the barn door. I titled it 'A shy foal".
I came back later to find out one of my brothers scribbled out the name and wrote in "Half a foal"
i didn't laugh at the time, but i do now!

I fully intended to do the other horse, but it took hours to do just the one. I wimped out and left him alone.
I also left the black outline around her. The shading looks a little 'plasticky' so i left the outline as a 'colouring book' sort of thing.
She's a little overweight too - should i give her some exercise? :)

I don't have a problem with you slipping this in at all! ;) especially since you aren't trying to sell a horse! :D but then again, it IS Ironhorse's thread, so she can yell if she wants.

Have you tried The Mitchell Centre (http://www.themitchellcentre.ab.ca/), PMU Foal Quest (http://www.pmufoalquest.com/index.htm), or other horse rescue operations in your area? I'm sure they would love to "off load" a compainon horse to a good home if you have one waiting!

Good luck! :)

Looked at both those societies you've mentioned. Need to look at the Mitchell Centre again - don't remember why it wasn't for me. A foal would be very tempting, but i'm not around enough for the responsibility, and I think a foal should be raised around more than one other horse for the socializing factor.
There used to be another rescue place right in my area (SERA), and I almost had an arrangement with them a year ago, but I backed out and now can't find hide nor hair of them (pun intended)
If I knew what I was doing I would go to an auction myself - but i'm afraid that I'd bring home the most hard-headed, foul tempered beast.

Thanks guys. They didn't win, place, or show--just my luck to enter an equine art contest with a judge that put up every abstract/contemporary painting. Some didn't even resemble horses.....sheesh!!

First of all welcome to wet canvas!!

Your peice is amazing!!!!
I'm in awe of anyone who can do digital work as good as this!. I have tried too but don't seem to have the nack for it.
The really cool thing is that this is like what I envisioned for this photo if I ever got around to painting it.

Great job!

Oooo Looking great so far artcrazy. IF I may suggest. Watch the way the foreleg on the standing horse is going into the shoulder. It's a bit too flat, and the shading a bit too harsh. Hindquarters a bit flat too. Where they attach to the body.

I must say I really like the loose background. Great feeling of atmosphier with out distracting from the horses.

Thanks for your input Twyla!

I can really see what you mean about the shading. I had a hard time blending b/c the acrylics were drying as soon as they were on the board, maybe oils next time! I have heard varying opinions on layering oils over acrylics, maybe this might help me improve the shading so it is not so harsh?

By the way, the previous post by "artcrazy" on this thread was not actually me!! I think my boyfriend's mom posted a response, and I had't logged off so it came up with my username!! (anyway, thanks for your support, Judy!!!!)

also, I finally figured out how to access the thread for the forum, so next time I participate in a project, I'll post on the thread for the project (my boyfriend's mom figured it out before I did!!!)

Thanks!

I really like this! I would never have imagined approaching it the way that you have done here. It looks so light and loose. The reference picture looked very intense to me with all those dark colors.
