I like this quite a bit. I like the obscure background, it really shows how much an interesting yet unrecognizable background can do for the subject.

Fabulous! I love the variety of textures you have achieved with your pastels. You've made terrific use of the play between forms modelled with tonal value and those flattened with into shapes with local colour (ie the scarf). The composition is wonderful. Really well done! :D

in portraiture, I often find the face does not match the style of the rest of the piece ... this one has that feel to me, too. You have two really nice styles going on ... one moody and muted- this is the face. the other is bright and expressionistic- that is the background and clothes.

try both styles and see which you prefer, unity is the key.

glad to hear you are working from life ... how do you like it?
