View Full Version : First try at casein

I've been lurking on the site for a while, and never had the nerve to post anything up until now. By profession, I'm an analytical chemist. I've just recently started painting. The only background I have in art was a drawing class I took in college. So far, I've been experimenting with different media, and when I tried casein this week, something just clicked. The picture below is my first shot at it. The title is "Mountain Town", it's 8 by 10 inches on masonite. It is intended as an illustration for a short story I wrote many years ago. I'm interested in what people outside my family and friend have to say. Thanks in advance,

Not bad. Needs some shadows in appropriate places and the road could be lighter and in perspective. You can crit me when I post, which I've not yet done. Keep up the good work.

Jacob, I think it will make a very nice story illustration! I'm glad you've enjoyed painting with casein. The matt finish makes them so easy to photograph too! Looking forward to seeing more of your casein paintings here.

Hi Jacob: What did you use as a reference for this illustration? Rich

The painting is for this story (http://jnewman.m72express.com/fiction/troll.html) that I wrote. The scene is inspired by various mountain villages I've seen, but it's not modeled on any particular place in Real Life(TM).
