A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: box
Project Leader: hlee
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Any Type
Medium: Any Medium
Subject: Other
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

What's your idea of a box? Sure we see them all around us, in many everyday objects for example, but how about having a little fun dragging them out here, or better yet, making your own? No limits on media - you can photograph it, scissor-and-cardboard it, pull up your sleeves with your hammer, whatever you feel like doing. They can take on a minimal look, colorful, decorated ... as you like it. Size doesn't matter, either. It's the essence of the box, your innovative ideas that count. There, "boxed" it all in!

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=168)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Cool project - that's an interesting reference link. What gave you the idea for this project?

Thanks, but I won't rob Rose Queen of the credit for that neat reference link. :D

Someone started mumbling about boxes the other night at the café here, and I thought they were talking about an existing project @ WC ... apparently not, so I took a poll on the spot, and got my lazy self to the projects forum and queued up for it.

Think s'about time boxes got some attention ... like some ppl aren't really conscious of them lying around, except when they trip over them, lol. Just as other things can be multi-functional, boxes can double up as objets d'art, or ...? Can take the form of a pen case, or ...? Have skirtings and spikes, or ...?

This project promises to be a little conundrum, if nothing else.

oh how cool. Twas I first mentioned the women beyond borders box project in the altered books thread - I liked the links people had provided in that thread so much I wanted to return a good one. Actually, I'm working on a box for another show right now. I'll sign up for this one and then hope I get the time to do it.

Can't wait to see the others.

Count me in. There are some gorgeous works @ the ref.link. I have one in mind. It will be about how I feel about my job, when I really want to be creating art. Thanks for this. :D

Ilene - I should thank you for that link, 'cause if you didn't share it with us all, this project probably wouldn't have existed! :D

TeAnne, leaflin - thanks for your interest in box ... I'm really looking forward to seeing all the neat "definitions" everyone can come up with. Was that a box, I saw in that last post, TeAnne? ;) Funny one!

Hope y'all'll have fun ...

Now this sounds like a fun project. I've collected boxes since I was a kid. I have more than I can count, but I don't believe I have ever made one. Count me in on this project :)

hlee
04-07-2002, 01:34 PM
Relax Geoff, the project guidelines certainly didn't mention being a girl or whatever to turn out a box, lol .... that'll be so sexist and discriminating! No, really, I might hafta carry a discussion in the art and society forum ... funny you said that! Things or activities that are stereotypically for one gender or the other. Everyone's welcome to join in, of course.

Sassybird, that's interesting. What sorts of boxes did you collect? Do they hold a significance for you - like little jars that hold your desires, favourite things ... ?

Very lovely box you've got there, gnu ... also found orchid's box deep in meaning, and kinda cute on the surface, too. Great to see everyone's having fun!

Thank you Teanne. Hmmm, I'm not sure there is much to tell. I created it in Paint Shop Pro, which is a digital painting program, not one of those 3d programs. I hope that digital images qualify as "any medium." :) I used vector shapes so I could adjust the nodes and (hopefully) get the right perspective. The carved design was done with cutout and white drop shadows. I've always loved little boxes and anything with tiny drawers. My dad is woodworker and has made several for me and I have made some tiny origami ones myself. I just couldn't resist this project.

Rose Queen, the epoxy I used is the 5 min version, it was supposed to be completely solid in about 1 hour, it took about 10 days overall. It was tacky for quite some time and I had to let it sit where nothing would fall on it (like dust) so it would be bright and pretty. It is not solid, whew....

I was getting worried about it.

It is intersting and I still haven't figure out what to use it for. I thought maybe postcards but the size is wrong. CDs well it isn't a very good way to store them on top of each other. I am still searching for a good use. hehe
