Hi- I am new to the site, and I wanted to start sining up for projects- this is my first. I understand the project except for "illumination"- how is it defined in the artistic sense? Is this like the iconography from Medeival times?

Illumination:Its calligraphy with exquisite decoration on the letters, the capitals, the borders and the scenes that describe visually what the meaning of the text is. It ranges from the crude figures and celtic knotwork to the gold leaf and ivy borders of the Gothic Art to the trompe le´oil of the rennaissance and French Art.

Hi everyone. Will be giving this one a try. As I love calligraphy and anything astrological I think I am going to enjoy this one. However will only be able to start at the end of October.

This sounds like a lot of fun. I've joined the project, and have submitted my inital sketch/concept.

inital design sketch for Pisces

Welcome aboard vinesqueen, didn't think anyone else was participating. I agree with your choice of using the Neptune symbol, the Jupiter one wouldn't have fitted in your design as good, although the formation of your 'eel' wrapped around the left side of the trident and pisces sign is partly the shape of the Jupiter symbol. Different idea of not using the fishes usually associated with Pisces, but I can see where you are coming from with the constellation idea, it will fit in lovely.
Would send the handle of the trident behind the cross bar of the pisces sign.

Only come back from my holidays yesterday so will be able to get down to doing something myself over the next couple of days. Will look out for your update.

Thanks Marie, I thought using the ell was a little differnt, but when I looked at the constellation I didn't see fish, I saw eel! I guess an eel is a fish, right? :D

I had played with the Jupiter symbol too, and it just didn't seem to work with the constellation as a thing, but now that you mention it, it does sort have that feeling too...

I was thinking about the trident handle, but the Neptune symbol, at least the ones I've seen, have the handle crossed... so I was trying to encorporate that crossbar into the pisces cross bar... Hmmm, hmmm hmmm. ideas percolating...

I have only seen the Neptune symbol with a cross bar as well, if you do want to incorporate that into your design I would maybe elongate your trident spikes and the handle so they sit above and below the Pisces symbol. It would balance out your design better and your little cross bar would be clearer for everyone to see.
Also not everyone is familiar with astrology and zodiacs so maybe if you finish off with 'Pisces' and the relevant date underneath your design it would be more meaningful to them.
Some more ideas to percolate...........:)

Looks nice vinesqueen. An eel is perfect, each culture took the shape of the constellation upon their own whim,so who knows?maybe some culture took the eel¡¡¡¡¡

Toying with the idea of trying some gold leafing (first time)to do the star constellation, scorpio symbol top left, and the scorpio name and date bottom right. Will do a couple of tests first trying 'flat' gilding (supposedly to be the easiest) and then 'raised' guilding. Dont know if it will work out but I can always revert back to the gold dip ink.

Oh good,my constellation¡¡¡¡

Dont worry if raising the gold doesnt go to well ,you can restart most of the times.hope it goes well.

Hi Richard,

Hope by joining this project it may liven up some more people into having a go as well. It really is a good project, its a shame there's not many participants.

So you are a scorpion as well..... artistic, friendly, a fountain of knowledge etc. want to know, who, where, when, why and what?

Going for some gold leaf on Wednesday so I can start practising some gilding.

Good luck with your schooling, read your post re; exams etc. I am only self taught as well, I have learned everything I know by reading and research.

Uploaded my second progress stage of the project. I will be continuing over the next couple of days. I think the gold leaf is going to be the next step. As I have never done gold leaf before I am only doing 'flat' gilding and after this project is finished I will be experimenting on doing a 'raised' gold leaf illuminated gothic letter.

Photographed this post instead of scanning, more truer to the original colours. Sorry its off a bit, had to take it from an angle to show up the gold dip penwork. Wasn't happy with the corners so filled them in with green gel pen, it looks a bit tidier now.
Next stage the gold leaf

Finished the project. Not as easy as it sounds when you read info re gilding. I had to use loose leaf gold because my art store didn't supply transfer gold. My first gilding was the 'M', very untidy because of incorrect use of adhesive. Tried scraping off the first layer of gold but it left an uneven surface hence the bumpy look to it. The second lot of gilding was the title and date, I applied the adhesive with a brush this came out a bit better. You learn by your mistakes, next time I do fine writing I will apply the adhesive with a pen nib. The last gilding was the star constellation, I think this came out the best as I had relaxed a little handling the loose leaf.
Wont let these errors put me off gilding, will continue to try and experiment further.
