View Full Version : early pastels

I was wondering, how were the early pastels made, say, like the ones from the 18th and 19th centuries and beyond. Did they use precipitated chalk and gum tragacanth? You see, I want to make some pastels like those, so I'm doing research. Does anyone hear know very much about this? What sort of white was used, not flake white, right?

Here's a link for how to make pastels :
About a year ago I started some pastel related threads where you can find useful info. Those threads had the title «October something...» and November and so on. Maybe you can find something there.
If you have trouble or don't find what you need, just PM me.
A good site for finding info is http://www.about.com

You might also ask some questions in Kitty Wallis's forum. She's made her own pastels for many years and will likely know what you're asking about.
