Temperatures in the 70's this afternoon, had to take advantage of it! :D

Plein-aire oil on canvas, 16 x 20", about one and a half hours.

Ruth,
This is lovely. I have to ask? Your paintings are all done in this botanical garden. Do you paint in any other locations?
Love,

Beautiful --as always.

I'm a bit envious of your 70 degree day--we were actually happy to be above 40 today! And they're predicting a snowstorm tomorrow.

I'd be interested in knowing the colors that you used in this if you're willing to share them. Particularly curious about the dark--it appears to have a purple tone--and the yellows.

The colors and light are gorgeous Ruth....however, well...at least on my monitor it appears as something strange happened with the resolution or image sharpness. I wonder if that's just me, do others see that..and if so, could you try to reupload it again?

It has that look of a very low resolution made large, resulting in some distortion.

Thanks Linda! I do paint in other locations from time to time, but the gardens are my favorite.

Phyllis - thank you! My plein-aire palette consists of these colors: titanium white
cadmium lemon
cadmium yellow medium
yellow ochre
cadmium red medium
permanent alizarin crimson
ultramarine blue

With one or two exceptions, all the plein-aire paintings I've posted here are done with these colors. When I try to add other colors, such as other reds, greens, purples, I get into big trouble.

K.I.S.S. (keep it simple, stupid) seems to work best for me. :D

Wayne, thank you. I like your loose style.

Larry, thanks. I uploaded the picture without resizing it first, and WC automatically resized it for me. Maybe that's what happened to the resolution of it. I'll try resizing it myself and upload it again.

I can tell you this....
we are starting now to get sick of cold and snow...though perhaps I'll get one more larger plein air of it before its all gone.

At any rate, your painting here triggers welcome warm reminders. Its a nice explosion of color, and I love the light that bathes the path.

Here's another photo, taken in sunlight. Sure makes a difference in color! Is this better?

Yet another lovely piece, Ruth. It is a nice touch of spring for those us us still freezing up here!

It is done with such delicate control of the atmosphere and such bold looseness that it looks like one big floral sitting on a carpet of grass draped over a huge table top .. awesome is the word.

Interesting Ruth...

was the first pic taken under the influence of an incandescent light bulb or flourescent? I know that flourescent tends to make colors greener...and usually washes out reds..so I'm doubting that.

The natural light is a delight...nice delicate use of cool colors. Nice piece indeed.....

The second posting is much better...clearer, richer color. I love the light thru the pathway..very inviting. You have a lovely painting location! I go out to a botanical garden to paint often in the spring... I never tire of the new spots of color that pop out!
