A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Big Cats
Project Leader: Wingnut
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Any Type
Medium: Any Medium
Subject: Wildlife
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

We AIN'T talkin' housecats - Lions and tigers and bobcats oh my! Big cats, wild cats, how about a Geoffroy's cat? My personal favorite is the lynx, but I think I'm on the menu, so I just admire them from afar...

want more ideas..? How about a Jaguar (the spotted kind, not the kind with chrome!) or a panther? Cougar? Serval? Cheetah? Ocelot? Leopard?

you get the idea... show us your big cats!

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=164)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Wing, I had already done one piece based on one of your reference images--it was a final version that I'd never posted. I've posted it in this project gallery, with an explanation. Hope that's okay.

But I'm starting another one even as I write--that majestic male lion is calling to me....."When I'm calling yoooou-oo-oo-oo..." :cat:

Great images, Wingnut!

Thanks for the project :)

Hey guys,

The Ocelot came from this website:
www.spottycat.com/marlos/emporium.html (http://)

Maybe good for other ref-pics too...!!

So everyone, please feel free to also use the ocelot, it will be nice to see all our different interpretations of the same kitty !!

Hey guys! great work everyone!!

love the "BCCS (Big Cat's Colony Summit)" Abu, that's funny! :D

Just a note, in light of recent issues here at Wetcanvas! PLEASE be VERY careful of your reference photos used for your big cat projects (and any other projects), copying another person's copyrighted work (including Katrem's ocelot I'm afraid) is not a good idea, unless you properly label it as a "study" of the original or change it so it is not a "copy" of the original.

The photos I've provided for reference pics in the project were (as far as I know) ones that where submitted by the original artist for everyone's use here at Wetcanvas, but other's I cannot be sure of and have no control over - so just be aware please!

I just posted this. I chose the paper color for the lion. The background will be very dark as in the reference photo. I feel like his right eye (on our left) isn't quite right but don't know why. ANY and ALL comments and critiques are welcome.

Thanks.

I had a lot of trouble getting the lion pic posted. It refused it saying it had to be max 200kb. That's tiny. I tried it again and it accepted it. But now when I try to click to the big pic it says it doesn't exist!!!

I went back to projects and sure enough, it's there!
Someone needs to check this little kink.....I think......;)

03-26-2002, 04:57 AM
Hey everyone !!

Just been looking thru all the progress-pics. WOW !!
I love seeing how everyone works their magic.....

My ocelot is almost finished, hope to put the final touches in today.

BTW the website that I took the ocelot photo from doesn't mention copyrights... However I don't know where the website's owner got the pic from either?! Copyright does get confusing....

If I just keep the ocelot for "personal use" (ie give it to my hubby) is that ok? Or is just posting it on WC a legal no-no already? Whaaaaaaaaa, I just wanted to practice and make a pretty picture.....:crying:

Katja

Wingnut
03-26-2002, 07:48 AM
Please don't get discouraged! ;)

I'm not going to pretend to know the first thing about copyrights Katja, but I think if your not going to sell it, your probably okay. The only other thing I would do is to make sure I titled it "Ocelot Study" that way there is no question that you were aware it wasn't yours and you were only using it for practice...

someone correct me if I'm wrong!

I sound like a broken record but - again: AMAZING work everyone!

Wing, do you think his right eye ( on our left) looks okay? Is is too small? It's bothering me and I don't know quite what's wrong.

Also, do you have any idea why the URL for the big pic isn't working from the thread? Do I need to "report" that to someone?

Thanks so much, OrchidLover, for your lovely comments! I'm so glad you commented. I was beginning to think the leopard painting was TERRIBLE because NO ONE had commented. I like him, but I'm happy to hear ANY critiques. My view can't be very objective and, besides, my eye isn't trained enough yet to recognize problems very well. I kept looking at him yesterday and saying "What's wrong with him?" :D The thing I'm NOT happy with is the background, but I have no clue what else to do with it.

Lovely feather paintings, both of them. Can't imagine what it takes to paint on a feather. How do you keep the vanes from separating while you paint? Is there some way you "prime" them first? Fascinating technique, beautiful result.

This is lovely, Geoff. Great pose and composition. One teeny thing, though, and it could be the scan, but it seems too much of a middle-range value-- like it could use a tad more contrast--maybe darken the stripes. Gorgeous as it is, though--this comment is really just a nitpick. :)

this was my first art project, so I know nothing about it, I guess ask a moderator or Scott?

Somebody asked me to look at their cat's eyes, and I've forgotten who already  sorry, but I promise as soon as I "officially" get off work (shhhh! don't tell on me) I'll take a closer look at everything...

Poor Wing! I'll stop harrassing you now.....oh, except for this one thing--I cannot tell a lie--it was I who asked for opinions on my lion's right eye (on our left). Nothing pressing. Just when you (or anyone) have time. It doesn't look quite right to me, don't know what the problem is.

My fault for not remembering after I started writing my reply, it wouldn't let me go back and read all the previous pages in the thread! (my short-term memory is non-exsistent)

what where we talking about?

OH! The lion's eye, that's right ;)

I think it looks fine, if you want to get extremly picky - I'd say you made the pupil just the tiniest bit too large and extended to the left (our left) but its barely noticeable and could be easily fixed if your doing more to the color in the eyes later anyway. What I really noticed when I compared your's to the ref pic was how freakin small that reference pic is! Sheesh - its a wonder you can see it at all! Your doing a great job - now get back to work! ;)

Have you searched the word "lion" in the image gallery yet? I found some more photos by Leaflin (sp?) and others that where really cool! :cat:

TeAnne! - I love your growlies too! but THIS one I had to look at twice! The first time, I liked him because he had that cool, laid back, "I'm too relaxed to chase you right now - maybe later." look...

... but on the second look I saw that twinkle in his eye that said "come a little closer squirrel - I won't bite."

Very cool  but I'm running away now!

Thanks Wingnut. Yes, that eye. I've erased and re-done that eye and pupil several times. But now with the charcoal pencil (aready erased that once as well), I don't want to start over. However, this is just the first layer, so I'm sure I can "fix" it in later layers. Thanks for taking the time to help.

Oh, yeah. That pic IS small and trying to blow it up made it pixely and blurry, so I had to kind of "make things up." Like the lion's left eye--I mostly made it up, but it seems to work. I'd like a better reference for his nose too. Thanks for the tip about lions in the reference library. That will surely help. Guess I'll head on over there.

Thanks for this project, Wing. It's great fun!

Thanks, Katja, Axl and Caron for your kind comments on my progress pic.

Axl, I hope you do the lion--I'd love to see your interpretation of it.

Caron, I use the pastel pencils for the first layer and for detail. They're pretty hard. But I usually combine them with NuPastel for layer one. I've now used three brands of pencil--Derwent, Cretacolor and Stabilo. I hate the Stabilo, Cretacolor (a favorite brand of mine for other mediums) is just okay. I prefer the Derwent over all--they seem to be a little softer and the color a bit more intense. NuPastels come in a form like Conte' only longer. They're not so messy because they're still a hard pastel. Try them--begin with a small starter set. I'm having a lot of fun.

Katja, I'm just getting ready to post the Final of this Lion King. :cat:

This is grrrrreat, Digi!

I love the "single pixel scribbler" (whatever that is) lines--I thought you did that with pen & ink. He has a slightly whimsical look to him, too. He'd be great as an illustration in a children's book. I like the grasses in the background, as well. Wonderful job!

Oh, and thanks for the story you attached to your smilodon. Very nice touch.

Thanks, Caron, Katja and Wingnut for your lovely comments. I had soooo much fun doing him. He's now in a frame on my "gallery" wall in my bedroom. I finally feel like I'm making a little headway in pastels.

Katja, I love your word "majestic-ness." I'm honored.

Wing, thanks for a WONDERFUL project and SUPER images. Yes, I'm probably going to have a go at another one--AFTER your 24 hour AE tonight/tomorrow. Looking forward to that bigtime!

How cute! :D

Lucky friend's daughter! These must have been done at the zoo or from pics - no beach balls floating in the jungle (that I know of anyway... ?)

Thanks for sharing Christie!

Cool, I had no idea that this would be posted anywhere bu the project page! I took the picture when the tigers at the calgary Zoo had their cubs. I drew it is about 15 minutes and now that I look at it again, it would have done deeper shadows, but the 7 year old is happy...

This is awesome. You're developing a very productive relationship with pastels. I really love the colors you've worked with here. I'll bet your finished piece will be mesmerizing. Love the details you've been doing on the faces.

Thanks, Greencook. It's so gratifying to hear everyone's positive comments because I have been working so hard to achieve some mastery over this medium. I think I may have my foot in the door now (or at least my big toe :D).

Y'all think I should finish this? because i've been so busy it seams that all i've been having time to do are these ink drawings which i can complete between classes in school and then colour it on my evening computer time between homework assignments and such. i'm usually too tired by then to do much anything else anyways. But yeah, i donno if i like this. blah. I did it when i was extreamly tired the other night and it really shows. Did some tampering with it in photoshop, but i'm still not sure. :/ might be a picture that never gets beyond this point..

Dreadfully sorry, I didn't know my picture got any comments. :) Thanks for the kind words.

birdlady, I lost the URL to my reference picture, but it's not full-body anyways. Not much more is shown in the photo than what I drew. :( This site: http://lynx.uio.no/jon/gif/cats/ is a really good source of cat pictures, if anyone wants some. I THINK they're all public domain, too. (It has a poor-quality copy of the picture I used as reference for my drawing, but that site isn't where I got my reference picture originally.)

Hi, all! I've been on vacation and there sure have been allot of new entrys since I last looked! They're all great but I really love Singha and Orchidlover6's King of the Jungle has definitely put a smile in my heart. :) You sure are a great group of talented people here.
Thanks to all that gave such nice comments on my featherpaintings. Lady Grey, I'll try to remember to take some progress photo's next time I do a feather. This is a new forum for me and hopefully I'll figure out what the heck I'm doing and how things are usually done here soon. Eileen, that's what's got me "hooked" on feather painting. The challenge of the feather itself and not knowing from one time to the next how a particular feather is going to behave while you're trying to paint it. To try to keep the feather together I apply a thin coat of gesso gently to the feather in the area my painting is going to be. After that is dry each layer of paint that is applied adds to the stablility of the feather. Katja, the feathers are approx. 12" long, pretty good size feathers. Hope this helps any of you that would like to try it. I will tell you though. It can become addicting. ;)

Hello Wingnut.

I have nearly finished my cheetah painting. It has been a wonderful project and I have enjoyed every minute of it, however next time I don't think that I would choose to paint four dotty cats as it would definatly send me dotty too!

The painting was from a combination of a few photographs of cheetahs and the sitting cheetah was quite poor which left me struggling with how the cats feet were positioned.

I think the next cat painting that I may do will be of lioness's.

Dark Shades:

Just go to the project main page. You know where you entered your lion pic? In that group of links, just click on Browse Finished Works (or Gallery, something like that). A list of final entrants will appear. Find yours, click on it, then you'll see a place "Comment". Click on that and you'll be taken to the "Post Reply" page. Say what you like there and when you submit, it will appear in the thread along with the thumbnail of your pic. Hope this helps.

wow, all these big cat things are great! I'm working on a cougar sculpture (1/3 lifesize) and could use some input. The pics I have on my page right now are from last week, and he's put on about 80 lbs (proportionately!) since then, so I'll post pics after I take new ones today. I could use input on this piece, particularly any anatomical things you notice are "off." Looking forward to getting some good feedback! (Posting this so I can find this forum again!) And y'all keep up the good work -- those scratchboard things, in particular, have my socks blown clear off!

I've uploaded work-in-progress photos to the Big Cats project page. I'm used to doing horse hooves -- the cat's toes were HARD for me, which surprised me a lot! I know I need to redo his ears -- they were better in the earlier picture (there's a picture from today, and one from a couple of weeks ago in that file). If you see anything else that I should change to make him more "cougar-like," I'd appreciate the help! There's a chipmunk there too -- I'm pretty happy with him, but the cougar I'm still fighting with. It will be bronze, I don't know what edition size yet, and the sculpture is 1/3 lifesized (18" tall). Here's a pic so you know which one's mine:
