A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: FND Trains
Project Leader: animal
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Any Type
Medium: Any Medium
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: 3
Maximum participants allowed: 1000

Description:

Hi, welcome to tonight's Friday Night Drawing...

The rules are simple. You have 2 hours to draw one or more of these in any medium (or sculpt if you like) and on any surface you like. Hoping you all have scanners or digi cams, if not please try these anyway and maybe you can post them later.

You have 30 minutes to select a drawing.

There are 10 images to choose from, all on the same theme, Trains. Please sign up for this project here and post in this project. You will be able to comment on any works here and your comment will go into a thread in the the drawing and sketching forum with a thumbnail of the art being discussed plus a link back to the full size image. :)

Remember to allow yourself some time to post your work before chat, which starts at 10:15 PM EST today in the Cafe Guerbois.

For those of you new to chat, go to the Community pull down menu in the upper left corner proceed from there after selecting Chat in the Cafe and of course clicking GO!

This is not a contest. We are here to have fun and enjoy good company. Hope you enjoy the images.

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=160)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Does anyone know where to see the artists comments on their own stuff? I didnt see it when i went through the "View all Projects" then to the picture itself... is it on that persons list?

Don't view all entries on one page. Just click on each person's nname and the thumbnail enntry and the artists comments will show up.

To view the artist's comments, you have to go to the Final Entries page, the one that just lists the artists and how many entries they have in the project (not the page that displays all final entries together). You then click on the artist and all his/her entries show up with comments.

You chose the same as me. The little piece of landscape that you can see out of the window of the cabin is just exquisite. I want to crop it out and keep it for itself in its own right. I found the perspective along the side of the train took a bit of getting right.

Not an easy one. Especially in watercolour. Looking forward to seeing some more.

Will be too confusing to me to comment on each person's work. Still not sure what I'm doing here I think. It takes too long to view all these wonderful pcs of work in full size (in order to see them properly) so just want to say I've looked at everyone's work and think everyone's done a great job - honest! I love the variety created this week on some pretty tough subjects. I feel bad not being able to comment on each and every one ... maybe I'll find the time after the weekend.
(not sure I like this way of doing the draws - of course it's still morning and may figure out an easier way of doing this abit later in the day.) One suggestion I'd like to make is that it would be nicer if we could go from entry to entry in full size and comment on each from there instead of having to click on the tiny (thumbnail), view full-sized version, then click to comment, then go back to do the next entry. Just my opinion. :)

I'm lost too on who I've commented on and who I haven't. Thanks to all who commented on my work , I really enjoyed painting this. I must admit I thought OMG when I saw the train images. I really like seeing the thumbnails in the thread and having the link to click on to go see it bigger. I also think it will be nice to be able in the future to go back to the art projects and see all the work in one place.

If you have any suggestions about how this format can be improved please share them. There is a thread about the project format in the site discussion forum.

Thanks to everyone for making this a great Art Event. Good JOB animal !!

I think the best thing about this project was that you could see all the little thumb nails at once. I do agree that a "next" button would be extreemly useful.

I like having all the comments in one place so that i can see everyones without having to search for everyones picture. I also like having all the pictures in one place so that i can comment on all of them...

I don't think i expect everyone to comment on my particular picture... they don't all comment when I post any other time so why would I expect them to comment now? But thats just me....

I loved all the watercolors and pastels and pencils... there was so much verioty for just a few train pictures. I always love seeing that. Interpritations are the funnest part of this thing :)

Looking forward to the next one....

Mal, Crissy, I think the new format has a heap of positive features. Overall it's a great improvement. It will take some getting used to, though, as we feel our way around the site in subsequent AE's. Being human, we are generally both delighted by the new and innovative, and resist it at the same time. Go figure. No doubt has something to do with comfort in the familiar. I know everyone worked very hard to come up with this very advanced format. For those of us who went through the demo on Wednesday, it was probably easier last night.

It would be great, though, if there were some way to keep track of who commented on mine and who I've commented on. First, I like to acknowledge those who comment on my work. And I learn a whole lot from ALL comments (not only on mine). It forces me to see in different ways, or points out aspects of a piece I didn't notice. After all, for me, drawing/painting is really learning how to SEE. And that has never been more clear to me than since I've been participating in these events. Second, blanket comments are great too, because as Crissy notes, nobody comments on everybody's or has everybody comment on theirs. And I don't think anyone expects that. But it would be a shame if personal comments diminish greatly, because those are the ones I, for one, learn from. Time will tell, of course and I would urge everyone to give the new format a fair chance and keep an open mind.

And, of course, this is all IMHO :D

Wingnut, our own Event Forum was precisely my idea too--I wrote to Scott with that suggestion about two weeks ago. Let's see how this goes first, though. That might be another alternative if needed. ;)

To All who took part in the event A JOB WELL DONE! Thanks for the 'challenging but interesting 'pics Animal and for hosting the event. The new system is harder on the 'comments' end of things but I think it's because WC is such a great site that we are all spoiled now:) I will try to get to the ones I have missed and hope to see everyone taking part again in the future.:cat:

Hi everyone,

I don't ususally hang out in the drawing and sketching forum as you all know because I primarily paint. But I do like the time thing and the surprise of not knowing what we are going to do so that is why I like to partake of these sessions. I t also helps me to meet other WC members who I would not normally come across, and seeing as much artwork as possible broadens ones horizons, so I really enjoy taking the time to comment on the posted entries and getting to know you a little. I agree the variety of treatments is wonderful.

With regards the new system I think it works well but reading the comments scattered randomly through one big thread - it is a little confusing despite the thumbnails ( which are marvellous). I don't know programming at all but is it possible that when a comment is made on a work it is entered in the thread as now, but could all subsequent comments on that particular piece be loaded underneath the first one. Kinda a number of threads within a thread thingy.

Thanks to Animal for being out host - liked the choice of trains, it was very entertaining and I may do some more just for myself.

Just thoughts from a visitor.

Pam

Again I'd like to give everyone a pat on the back for jobs well done. And also thank you to adiadneArts, kokopelli & tuatara for the kind comments on my entry.
Am thinking maybe I'll be able to get used to this way of doing things and within a couple of weeks will be whipping around being able to check out everyone's work with no problem. I enjoy these events mainly because I can learn from everyone else's work.
Have been under the weather yesterday and today so that probably attributed to my confusion this morning ... didn't mean to be negative on this setup. I realize alot of work has gone into creating it and I also realize as with every change there are usually bugs to work out. Great job Scott on what you've done here and look forward to next week's draw.

Think I've solved my problem ... have opened up the list of participants window and am just going down the line and this way I'm able to keep track of who I've commented on and who I haven't ... as long as I don't close that window before I'm done. The comments opens up a new window so I'm able to just go back to the work and see it so I can remember what I'm commenting on. So it's not as difficult as I was thinking it was earlier. :) :)

After trying to commennt on everyones picture and failing miserably and seeing an idea put forward by a couple of people I was wondering....

Could we use the project forum for showing our art attempts AND have our own forum for posting comments on each piece? Essentially the idea is that comments on each picture would be placeed under a thread specific for that picture, rather than all comments being in one big scrambled thread.

You've done a good job on this one I think! I too cringed when I saw it was trains as I've never done a train before, but like you said ... it's a learning curve and they're good to be faced with occasionally. I also understand about what you're saying about what comes from the scanner ... I tend to sketch light and so the scans turn out terrible. But I think you've done just fine on this one ... you picked a tough one to do too! :)

I just wanted to say great work everyone and thanks to animal for hosting and being the first test case for the new system. There are some things that I like about the system, like being able to see all of the works in one gallery and the thumbnails in the threads. I didn't care much for all of the back and forth between windows, though. Hopefully, a way can be devised to keep the comments about a particular piece together with the piece instead of throughout the thread. Maybe show them in a list that is tied to the image posted in projects. If I had my druthers, I'd say lets have an Art Events Forum.

But, all in all, this was another great project and thanks to Scott for coming up with this system. It'll be great to be able to comment on works posted in Projects that I may not come across in the forums.

Super  to everyone who took part, they were all brill.
I think that the new projects is a success (I definitely like the thumb nails) I'm glad that the drawing forum can sort of get back to normal now, as much as I love the drawing events, they were killing the drawing and sketching forum ...pushing too many posts down and driving the genuine drawers and sketchers away!
I also have to admit with others that have commented on making it easier to keep a track on who's commented on what etc.
Is a seperate FND forum out of the question?

Hi everyone!

I want to thank you those who developed this new system for their effort. A couple of things, though. Luckily, I can enjoy fast connection and stay online 24 hours but I understand that for people that don't have this possiblility it really is a pain to go back and forth between the windows. (It's also time consuming, modem connection or not. Too many mouse clicks make the system less user friendly than it could be!) One more thing: Is there a way we can have all the comments for every work in one thread or at least collected together?

Your comments here (please leave the links above intact, so others know what you are talking about!).This is fabulous!! I love the colour you got in this. It has a real spring crispness to it. I did the same image but I used a new pencil I picked up on Thursday-hoping to achieve this kindof effect but I failed..:( This is very enjoyable!!

I everyone, Im just adding to my earlier post about this new setup. I still think its a great system for the startup of the draw-easy access, you can see your images better and the thumbpics are great! Its the after that is troubling. I miss being able to see someones image and what was said about it.(and Im not talking just my own) I found it a real learning process. It allowed you to see things in the image that you may not have.. Ive learned alot from these FND's and thats gone. You cant keep track of what was said about whos and also cant acknowledge properly comments about your own unless you sit on this thread. I still have not found where I have been and not been for commenting. I agree that some kind of setup that would allow that would be benificial. I think to have it set up that you can see the image and all the comments with it, is leading back to a forum idea. These FND's are relatively new(or young if you prefer) and only see it growing. There are new members joining it every week. I think it warrants its own forum. The initial set up under the projects would still be great-it certainly improved to the old way!! And the ability to see all the images submitted on one page is fabulous-I wouldnt want to see that go. But the getting lost and lack of viewing comments properly could use help....just my HO...:)

Mal: *puts on Sherlock Holmes art hat*

I can tell you were using your infamous 3 colors technique on this, and that you did a postcard! More of that evilness... But also that you were chatting and painting, and hmmmmm helping out Animal with the night?

Do you know how I know? Cause a) I see the blue, the red, and the sort of muted yellow for brown in the corner. b) also that just this morning I saw found out that you are only 6 postcards from finishing project 1, and lastly *dun dun dun!!!* c) cause you told me just now in MSN chat...

The perspective IS quite good, I see you've been drawing again, which also explains the detail under the wheels, and why it isn't finished, you spent more time drawing this I bet... Ah ha!!!

Sure you call yourself a watercolorist, but yer just a frustrated sketch artist like the rest of us... nice try Mrs. Smith... lol ;)

Good work...

No, Wingnut. This is proof that you don't stink at pastel. You should have seen my first attempt-now that stinks! You're good at color and the basic shapes; now you just gotta deepen the light and shade so it looks more 3 dimensional!

Hi All! I just wanted to thank everyone who commented on my piece. I was pretty unhappy with it but I feel better now. Guess it's not too bad. I'm going to do more work on it though--the perspective is off on the railroad tracks. My husband wants to frame it and put it in his office!!! (Scary) But he's a train-iac, so he might be a bit biased. I want to put a little detail in what I'm calling the "skirt" -- the grill on the front of the locomotive. It looks so "blobby" to me. He says it's called a "cow-catcher"! UGH! He dug out a train book with old b/w photos of engines just like this, so maybe I can make it look decent enough. I've never had anything of mine hang where non-family could see it. I've got some trepidation. Thinking of not signing it but he says I must. Maybe I'll use a pseudonym... :D )

I've looked at everyone's work and all of it is soooo wonderful. I love seeing how we each handle the same image. But the commenting procedure has become a bit difficult, especially since I'm not quite well this week. I spent a lot of time at it yesterday and my old bones get preeeetty tired. And at this point, I can't remember everyone who I commented on or everyone who commented on mine. With over 200 posts now, the thought of finding where I left off is overwhelming. So please know that your efforts are enjoyed and appreciated by me and your comments on mine were very helpful.

This event, as always, was great fun and I look forward to next week. Animal threw a curve, I think, and what a great challenge! Great idea, great images--something I'll bet most of us wouldn't have done otherwise. I love the feeling of community and the support and appreciation we have for one another. That's something you can't buy--priceless!

(G-d, stop me before I get maudlin! :D )
