View Full Version : Paintings in Memory of Sooz

It has been planned that during this week, and next if you wish, we will be offering this thread to those folks who would like to paint a painting (in whatever medium you wish) and post it to this thread in honor of our Guide Khadres (Sooz).

There will be a virtual paint-out on VPON at the end of the week and those members (most of whom are WC members too) will be posting here also.

So if there is a memory of Sooz that inspires you, go ahead and paint in her honor. Sooz loved landscapes and animals, but whatever you wish to paint will be fine.

There have been a few paintings already started/completed - just copy your painting to this thread too if you wish.

Painting is wonderful therapy for a sad heart.

Thank you for the invitation Kat. I started this this today before learning of Sooz's passing then spent the remainder of the day thinking of her as I painted. It will forever remind me of her and her sunny disposition.

Here's for you Sooz........

What a wonderful idea, Kat. I'm sure that all who loved her will want to participate. What better tribute to an artist than art?

This is especially fitting since Sooz so loved to teach and encourage artists. She would be so pleased to know everyone was painting for her.

What a lovely idea. I am in the throes of packing up and moving back to Masssachusetts this week so don't konw how much painting I will get in but will try...and in any case will keep checking back to see what others are doing. Sooz has been in my thoughts since I first learned the news.

I'm sadden to hear about Sooz passing. She responded to my first posting here about types of pastel paper, I immediately got a feeling that she was very kind and thoughtful.
I did this painting from a photo in the reference library, I entitled it 'Free' for her, in eternity, is where she is. http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/04-Sep-2006/73425-Free_500_x_591.jpg_400_x_473.jpg

There is a field that I pass by every day, that has this old chair sitting in the middle of it; sometimes there are balloons tied to it, others, it just sits there..once it was stolen, and a sign was placed asking to
PLEASE RETURN IT, and someone did...I always wondered what the story was behind it, and had planned to do a painting..was it someone's Grandma or Grandpa's favorite chair? Was it Mom's favorite..etc??? The field is surrounded by these lovely old trees, and there are wild flowers there also...anyway, I thought of this chair sitting in the field...and did the painting for Sooz...Tres

Gorgeous work! I know Sooz would be so deeply touched to see all this beautiful art created in her memory.

Tress...that's not fair! Your painting and the story with it gave me the chills. And yet, I can picture Sooz in that chair enjoying the view. Well done!

Kordelia, your beach scene is lovely...so serene! Sooz often mentioned missing the sea.

Moon, that's a haunting painting. Very nice work!

I've thought long and hard on this and I want to dedicate a painting to Sooz that I just completed - it was one of the very last paintings that she commented on and she said it was "wowza."

So here is "Suzanna's Choice":

What beautiful paintings here! I think Sooz must be enjoying them from where ever she is!
I have been thinking that if I did something for Sooz it would be a small landscape, a "quiet" one with sunlight....then remembered that in fact I just finished one a week or so ago and never posted it. It was just a quiet, sunlit morning in front of our house in Maine....peaceful, serene, soothing. I hope she approves!

I had trouble focussing on painting over te weekend. Maybe it's because I've not been able to paint consistently since last fall and the lack of practice is showing.
Anyway I thought of Sooz and how much she loved to paint. So I kept at it til I found something I could work with.

"Softly on the Corn" Pastel on Wallis 11x14

It's a little bleached out as I took the photo on the easel in the field.

The next one is in my backyard and is the view I see everyday on the way to the garage from our back door.

"Old Maple" 17x11 Pastel on Wallis

This photo of the finished painting was taken with work on the easel in natural light.

Monica, My prayers are with you and your family.

Cori, Thank you for the posting. It's still hard to believe she's gone.

Thought Sooz might have enjoyed sitting in the shade under the jacaranda tree and gazing out over green fields.

Hi all. I did 2 actually. I was doing one of a Rose called Peace which seemed appropriate. After I finished and photo it I found this picture that seemed to evoke a certain mood. It's of an empty bench in a beautiful setting.
Sorry, guys but, I did these in acrylics. I started doing it in pastels but, both seemed to want to be done in acrylic.
Frankly I did not have any paper for pastels either.
But, I hope you don't mind I post my painting in memory of Sooz in paint and not in pastels.

Diane

Anyway, In Memoradum:

Such beautiful tributes!
I was in the middle of the WDE when I got the sad news about Sooz, so I dedicated my entry to her. It's acrylic, not pastel, but it's of England, and I know she loved England.

In case anyone is still looking for a subject to paint, here's a link to Sooz's WDE, her own photos:

I wanted to reiterate my invitation to the Paintout to Celebrate Sooz's life, tomorrow. VPON is hosting it, but we want to open it up to everyone who knew her and wants to attend the online memorial.

All you need to do to participate is:
1) Make sure you have Yahoo messenger installed on your computer (it is free at www.yahoo.com).

2) If you do not already have a Yahoo ID, you will need to sign up for one.

3) PM your Yahoo ID to me and I will add it to my list of people to invite for the memorial.

The paintout starts at 6pm Mountain time. To see what time that is in your country, please visit the link tot eh world time clock below.
http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?month=9&day=8&year=2006&hour=18&min=0&sec=0&p1=55

This will not be a traditional memorial service - just a place and time for us to paint the things Sooz loved. She was a wonderful landscape painter and truly loved her canine friends!

You do not have to sign up for VPON to participate. We want this to be open to anyone who wishes to attend.

Also - the moderators and I have been discussing the possibility for an earlier start time, since we do have moderators in locations around the world. There is a possibility of someone being in early enough to open the memorial up a bit earlier than this time. If you want to check - just log into Yahoo sometime on Friday and if the memorial paintout is on, someone will invite you in.

Then, we will all paint for her and remember our beloved Sooz together!

Please PM me if you have any questions. I do not want to Hijack this thread, but wanted to post the invite so people know it is still going on and that they are welcome. I will do my best to answer the questions quickly. Thanks.

The online memorial for Sooz went very well today - we had about 15 people, from all around the world, attend and all of us seemed to be painitng in her honour.

We also had two very special guests, Sooz's daughter Monica and Granddaughter meghann, came by to attend the paintout. The actual celebration of her life was going on in Colorado at the same time, so it was extra special to be able to attend it with the family!

I'll be posting my paintings later on.

Wow, what lovely paintings in tribute to Sooz. I've enjoyed them all so much, although still so sad at the occasion. I'll post a picture here that I started last night in the VPON paint-out session in tribute to Sooz last night. It's actually another in my "Canadian Farm" series, though done from a photo this time rather than from life. It has no particular "Sooz" association, other than the fact that she was always so wonderful and encouraging - and while I was up at the farm I was feeling really encouraged to go on with my art, but then came home from Canada enthused and invigorated, only to learn the sad news about Sooz. :(

So Sooz, I wish I could have shared these farm pictures with you.

I started this at the VPON paintout after being thoroughly frustrated with the oil I was working on for her. The oil is ok, but still a long way from completion (darn drying times). So this is one of her babies (another from her VPON sketchathon months ago)

I just wanted to thank all of you for your beautiful work in memory of my mom. She would have been so proud of all of you! I hope to spend more time on Wet Canvas ( I should have done while she was here) and get to know you all better. It makes me feel so much better to know how much my mom was loved by you all.

I also wanted to thank you all for your kindness to my daughter during the paint out. It was a difficult time for Meg and it was very awesome for her to have an online connection during the celebration of life. She's very much and online kid and it made her feel like she was connected to others who were grieving when she could talk to you all.

I know my mother is watching over us all, enjoying the wonderful works you created in her memory and hoping we'll all keep going with new and more ambitious efforts in the future. And considering the veritable run of weird/bad/crud luck I've experienced lately, I'm sure she's laughing her head off up there too. Who'd have thought a person could blow a tire a hour north of town, get sicker than a dog and then have an idiot pull out in front of them in less than three days time? Heeeee.. the funny thing is, this is EXACTLY what happens any time a tragedy like this occurs in our family, as I'm sure mom told you. It's very typical. It's almost as if those who have departed are trying to get our minds off of our loss and on to life. And boy howdy does it work.. :)

You can be sure about that! WE all loved Sooz. This place will never be the same without her.
But it seems to me you inherited her wonderful stength and sense of humor so we know she will live on through you and your family....and her spirit will certainly live on here.

Hugs to all of you!

She's very much and online kid and it made her feel like she was connected to others who were grieving when she could talk to you all.

We were thrilled to have both you and Meg at the paintout, Monica. It really helped us feel connected to Sooz and to be virtually a part of the actual celebration in Colorado was doubly special. Thank you to you both for being there.

That we were able to bring some measure of comfort to Meg - that is a wonderful thing. It's hard to be a teenager and suddenly lose a grandparent - especilly if you don't have other cousins around your age to relate the experience with. Having the online community there probably helped bridge alot of those barriers and opened her up to grieve with friends she didn't even know.

You are both welcome to our VPON paintouts anytime!
