Someone just gave me a box of oil pastels .. before I even open the box, can someone give me quick run down. Can you mix them on canvas or paper or whatever is the preferred board by imposing one color over the other or are they like crayons where a color is a color and you do the best with the colors you have?

Check out the Oil Pastel Association (http://www.allart.com/) website. It's amazing what some artists can do with oil pastels. Unfortunately I'm not one of them...mine have always looked like crayon drawings. :o
Good luck, and if you find any good tips please let me in on the secrets! ;)

Yesterday I saw a book listed at Chapters online called "Oil Pastel for the Serious Beginner". It's brand new, not available at Chapters yet but can be ordered. I can't wait to see it because it is difficult to find anything instructional about oil pastels.

.. found out in a page of LandScape Painting by Doherty that you need to use them on rough surfaces and that they can be mixed and overlaid and that there are hard and soft. The ones I have are of the harder version and I would imagine they are not expensive ones as someone bought them for their son and he didn't want them so they gave them to me. They will be good for fooling around with .. who knows. Will check the library when I go over on Friday and see what they have .. gone now to check out this link of Oil Pastel Assoc.
