View Full Version : Week 31 Classical Art Journey

07-29-2006, 06:33 PM
Hi there!

We folks are on a journey to discover art of a classical nature.
Each week, we do a small study of someone that peeks our
artistic nature and we share it with one another.

Sometimes, we miss a week, that is ok! No one is going to catch
our sweet Tyree this year. :)

But we have fun together and learn along the way about
everything we want to learn about.

You are welcome to join us! Please bring food :p

So how bout a painting by Goya to start us this week!

Not so sure of the story behind this painting. Wonder why or what the guys
in the back are up too????

Very nice indeed!

I agree with Nickel here, very bold and authentic use of color here. The eyes seem to speak to me.

Nickel these guys in Goya's painting are pretty spooky. They seem to be soldiers, either they are bodyguards or they are out on the town looking for a good time. I can't figure it out either. he he.

maybe the willies.........
I forgot about Fl not having seasons..here in about 6 weeks maybe the nights will start to be a little brisk.....I always liked a palm with christmas lights.:)

I've almost figured out what I want to study this week. How bad is that?
Side note...
I want to make one of those little fairy doors I keep hearing about. Have you all heard of them? Maybe a little later. I am not sure if I paint a Mona Lisa on the door panel, it's classical ;)

Well, wonders of all....finally put some paint on....
I'd been eyeing this painting up for awhile thinking ...
Well, it is part of a series by Winslow Homer

This is my study reference Boys in a Dory

You can read about the series here

Homer did these in watercolor.
I am working in oils, just a rough placement so far
A little grayer and we will see later how it turns out. :)

I am not sure if it is the way I took the pic
or if my horizon is off. I'll check but it looks
to me off here.

Do you believe if you go over the horizon
you fall off the face of the earth
get eaten by sea monsters....hehe...:p

08-03-2006, 07:56 PM
lol, I think I've fixed the horizon, but my boy
he got eaten by sea monsters. ;)

 me

nickel...fairy doors:lol: hmmm....you mean like a door for tinker bell to get in and out:lol: .....i love the water in your painting...too bad about the boy...i use to live in st. croix...usvi...so...i do believe in sea monsters ...pirates...ghosts...and falling off the edge of the horizon:eek: tyree:wave:

08-03-2006, 08:47 PM
Lol,does tinkerbell need a door
It's been while since I saw PeterPan..but the doors would be
tinkerbell size.....I'll see if I can find anything online about them.
I think I remember they where a fad in London...????
Maybe it was Ireland....

Well I have to find some more little boys for the boat....hehe
don't want the monsters to go hungry
maybe I'll give them a spear as a weapon.

Anyway, maybe I can figure out how to do something for us to do a traditional classical fairy door. Sure there has to be a way...

Need to find my lunette study too. .....it is still hot here
No relief ......I just don't remember it being this hot everywhere.

Nickel just when do you find time to paint - !!!
Here is my sketch of the week - a buch of rocks

Stonehenge by John Constable 1820

08-04-2006, 12:44 AM
Fairys did I hear someone say fairys? I saw one in my garden last week!!!

08-04-2006, 12:30 PM
Stonehenge, I like how you've sketched this out Barb. It has a nice feeling with the graytones, lots of mystery.....just right.
I like too that you have the openess around to get a sense of space and too that you feel like you are right there steps away from touching the stones.
Well done!

Like your little fairy too.....she's cute....what did you have to do
put out sugar water to catch her

Or beer? lol.....never know they may like that too.....lol

I paint when I should be doing something else of course....;)

I did find out that the doors are like 6 inches tall.
so I guess 4 inches or so wide....

It should be fun to do some over the winter for next years garden. I have a plan.......:D
