Greetings lovely pastellists (is that correct grammar? lol)
I am designing a logo for a spring water company. Their mascott is a team of 4 Percheron horses pulling a wagon with barrels on it. This is a work in progress, thought it might be fun to see how it progresses! After doing 2 sketches for the layout, this is the beginning of the pastel itself. Working on the La Carte this big makes me nervous, but I must be brave as I love this paper! If I have to sneeze I walk out of the ROOM! ;-)
So, here is the beginning sketch for you to see... this just is a layout of several different photos compiled together. You can see what it will essentially look like, well, hopefully...
Comment away!

Okay, this is the sketch done on the La Carte paper. Sorry for the dark photo, I took it right at my desk and lighting isn't great. Hope you can see it ok! I didn't sketch in the river yet, I want to do that last as I SUCK at landscape! (god I hope I don't ruin it!!! Pray for me!)

Okay, after 2 hours of FoodTV, this is what the next stage looks like. I am off to bed and will continue tomorrow! So far it is looking great to me. Again sorry for the poor lighting! At this point I swear if anyone comes near my table with a drink or runny nose, so help me.... ;-)

Jen,
Looking great! Do you work on a flat surface as opposed to an easel? Just curious from the pic.

This is going to be great. How did you get the job? Did you take a photo or did they give you one to work with?

I will try and take close ups tonight! I got the job because the owner of the spring water company saw my stuff on my auction site, then went to my website. He loved the pastels of my horses, and wanted that same style for his new label. So, since they live about 2 hours from me here in TN, I drove over there with my nikon D70 and shot about 100 photos of the team hooked up. They were in a parade that day, so it was really convenient! I am doing the whole label, so after the pastel is done, I will scan it and build the label in Illustrator. Will be cool! (I hope!)
I work flat, no easel. I like to get really close to my work, so my face is right up there. I like to move my paper around, too.

Good evening :-)
Okay, I finished the cart and rider tonight. Now comes the HARD part! Oh how I wish Paula could posess my body for that part! She is so fabulous with landscape! Please send me some good 'awesome pastel river' vibes!!!!!!

Your work is super. The horses look like you could pet them. Oops, I almost rubbed off some of the pastel. I'm sending the good vibes for the background. Vibe, vibe, vibe.........

I wondered if you wanted to angle the wagon a little more towards the viewer so the cargo of water becomes more prominant. The angle would be pushing the perspective a bit. I love your horses!

well, too late for that! I am not doing this again, lol! The owner loves it this way so I am not going to even suggest another angle. He wanted to see all 4 horses and the wagon, so this was the best view I had for that.
trudging on! :-)

Okay, guys, what do you think? (the river isn't perfect, but it is there, lol. I am hoping that when it is shrunk down to put on the label that it will look like a GREAT river then! ;-) ) I will take a better photo outside tomorrow, this one has too much flash on it! and the other one is too dark, so go figure... but you get the gist...

Btw, any constructive criticism about the river is welcome! (attn: you landscape people! ;-) I can play with it some more if you think it needs it. I didn't want to put foilage around as I wanted the focus to be the team and the river. What do you think? Did I tell you I HATE doing landscape yet? lol

WOw! Amazing drawing and I find it really interesting how you work each part separately....which clearly works really well for you. I think it was the time in front of the Food TV that did this of course!
Very nice...it's hard to comment on the water/river though since the photo isn't close up...but I think it looks fine from what I can see.

Jennifer, this is looking great. As for the question on the river, I think just a small amount of grass will keep the water from running all over your floor. :D
Keep up the great work.

okay here is the final shot! A better quality photo, too! I added some more blues in the water (thanks Paula!!). I sent it to the client and he LOVED IT!!! 2 thumbs up! Now I have to design the label for a 24 oz bottle :-) That will be the easy part! Illustrator, here I come! Thanks for all your comments :-) they really helped turn this pastel terror job into pastel 'ooh, that isn't too bad, ya know?' job! :-)
