Hi Kate,

You have been studying how light behaves on the animals' eyes, haven't you ? Confess !
I like the female tenderness that she has in her eyes.
It will make a great match and I could bet that the person who buys one will buy the other.
Good luck with the show.

Kate this is really lovely. The eyes are very well done. Any tips for working on velour - I've just got some and am a bit unsure how to proceed (especially at $8 per sheet!)

Hi Kylie,

I will confess that I don't take any special procedures working on velour.
Some people say that harder pastels work better, but I've used soft ones like Sennelier and they worked fine, although I have glazed ove them with harder pastels to kind of push the pigment into the paper.
Mind that it's difficult to erase on velour, but velour accepts colour pretty well, thus being easy to cover mistakes.
Some say that one can use an air can with a tube to blow the pastel (CAREFULL NOT TO BREATH).
What brand did you buy ?

Best regards,

M Douglas

Thanks Jose'! Yep, I confess.

I am unsure how long this took to do. Probably 10 hours divided up over several days. I'm awful at timing!!:o

Kylie, I learned on velour and didn't know it was supposed to be difficult. But if you plan your color scheme ahead of time, it works out well. I use medium soft pastels on my velour, like Rembrandt and Geraults. I use Nupastels for details. I like them better than pastel pencils.

Piper, velour board is just mounted velour paper. The same company that makes the paper, makes the board too. Hammerfule or something like that. Jose' might remember better than me!:D

LOL, Peggy! Thanks!

Thanks, Paula, Tammy, Holly, Leirrem, and Melodie! Means a lot!

Hi Kate...as you can see, I'm a newcomer. It's nice to meet you.

I just wanted to chime in and say that your lioness is beautiful - you've captured the animal's spirit in those eyes. And you make it look effortless!

06-24-2006, 09:53 AM
Can a large predatory cat be tender? Because this is tender, soft, gentle, but strong. Really, really nice.

I have one piece of velour sitting in my paper file....but it looks so intimidating....

Kim, Don't you let that itty bitty little piece of paper get you down!! Velour isn't hard to work. You just need some planning ahead. Play with a small scrap first. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with it.

Anni, Hi, thanks, and welcome to our group!!

Oh well, no accounting for judges. She didn't place, neither did my male lion.
But this equine pastellest is happy, cause my Arabian piece, Twilight Smoke, got second place!
I'm going to take photos this evening when I go back for the reception and post the pieces in Monday's new Scumble.
