Hi Gang, I did this piece for my son who is interested in the family name. I figure the calligraphy and Heraldry have been intertwined for centuries. Let me know what you think. It is done in Ink and Colored pencil. - Chris

I have not done a lot of research, but the "black hand" symbolizes valor and is a warning to enemies. - Chris

have you found a good book on heraldry symbols & their meanings? It's one of those things I want to dabble in... And then my obsession about historical accuracy kicks in & I need to *know* what I'm doing. :rolleyes:

Diana, Thanks for the cool web site. I would love it if I could make my family trees look that good. Some of the likes to follow off that page were really fun and informative as well.

Tess, Thanks for looking in. I haven't done much research. I use a site called irishsurnames. They have a page off of it that describes the basic charges in the crests:
