6"x 7.5" Charcoal pencil on 140 lb wc paper
Took almost the whole 2 hours. I liked the lines and patterns in this one, and just wanted to try to do the water spray. Would have liked it a little darker, but am not too unhappy with it.

Good going - water to me is very hard to draw like that when it is in action.

Great job on a tough subject. Love what you've done here, Ruth! When I looked at this photo I liked the way the water was being thrown off the bird but realized it would be tough to do ... glad you did it and showed me it really IS possible! :)

this is great ruth! it was an awesome ref pic and you've captured it really well. the water is so well done ...how did you do that???:)

Great Water, Ruth! It was an interesting image to do - I thought it was one of the hardest but your water looks better than the ref. picture. Fabulous!!

You really made the water look real - this was a tough one and you handled it very well. Glad you showed us how it's done.

Thank you all for your encouraging comments. :)
I thought of the water as a pattern, and worked on the negative shapes. I tried to follow the direction the water was falling in from each wing and from the curve of the body.
I did think of drawing it upside down because it was the lines and the patterns I was after, but didn't quite have the nerve. :D

I think you were one of the only ones to try this. You did an awesome job!! Wow!
Love how you got the water:D I didnt have any idea how it would be done and thanks for showing us! That was a good idea thinking in negative shapes! Good thinking-it worked!!! Excellent!! Glad you found a place in your chaos to join us:D ...I thought of you !!!!

Wonderful job Ruth!
I kept looking at this one, but just diddn't have the guts (or the time) to even try it - good for you for showing us up and making it look easy! ;)

Thank you Caron. It must have been you thinking of me that helped. :)
The living room carpet will be cleaned on Tuesday, and then I have the pleasure of moving everything back. :D
Thank you Wingnut. :)

good job on the water. that must have beem very hard to do. You caught the sense of him jumping up out of it.

This is wonderful, Ruth. The feeling of action and your treatment of the water is supberb!
Great work, you have captured each splash and ripple as the water cascades of the penguin, water is very difficult

yeah, that was a tough one
you did a nice texture job on that water

RuthT, great sense of motion in this drawing! I feel like I should jump back to avoid getting wet!
You really did a fine job with the water, I took one look, really really loved the bird, but shied away from the impossible water.
You showed us nothing's impossible!

Great job showing the water. This was far too tough for me to work with.

Thank you Orchidlover, Ariadne, Rod, Zotma, Artdudette, and BlackTigr. :)
Sorry to be so late with my reply, but have been moving furniture the last two days. Am now sitting waiting for my carpet to dry after being cleaned. That's the last of my decorating - I'm now ready for spring! Of course, now I have to move it all back. :D :D :D

As everyone else has already said - TRULY AMAZING!

You're water reminds me of the effect watercolor artists do with salt.
Thanks for sharing your insights on how you did it as well.
Have a great day! :)

Thank you for your kind words greencook. :)
I've been trying salt on my watercolours, but without much success so far. Think I have to get coarser salt.

This bird looks like he's really in motion. Nice job.
